  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It would be awesome to have multiple aspect ratio guides built in the camera, so that we dont have to comit to a certain ratio, but can still see the framing for it!

That shouldn't be a problem, just a software thingy... right?
I'm signing on for that too.

What's different about that request compared to what is already in-camera ?

Need: 2.39:1, 2.0:1, 1.85:1, 1.78:1, 1.66:1, 1.33:1

You gonna get what Red is gonna give you. :whistling:

Red One wouldn't have been what it is today if it wasn't for the community so...

Anyway, guidlines in camera shouldn't be a problem. I mean, it's just guidelines, not a new codec.

Would you like lines or would you like the area outside shaded a bit darker?

I believe that to be a golden ratio guide and it's of course a still photography camera.

But it would be nice if we could choose a guide for a certain project. Let's say we want cinemascope (without anamorphic lens). Then by choosing that, the left out area that isn't a part of the cinemascope image is shaded so that the image inside the guide is clear.

Cursors

Cursors

What I find is that 4:3 if full overscan, not TV safe.

Try the CURSOR setting, it defaults to CENTER, and if it is you won't see the 4:3 TV Safe Title or Safe Action cursors.

Yeah, I know it would be ridiculously easy, but its often the easy things that get overlooked. Just wanting to make sure...

Rather than guide lines in the display as shown on the left I prefer the outside area shaded as shown on the right. The example shows 16:9 guides on a 4:3 image. The camera should always record the full 4:3 sensor area and final framing and croping will be done on the computer but such guides or shaded areas help a lot to frame for the planned aspect ratio.

To get the most out of "Rule of Thirds" guidelines they should be applied to the planned aspect ratio area but maybe I'm asking too much.

I really like the shaded look - maybe a little darker though so it's easier to see.

BTW, isn't RED ONE's sensor 16x9? I don't see why Scarlet will be different.

I like the guide-frames. Though I wouldn't use them for post-cropping (I prefer cropping in camera), buth rather using it to see the mic-boom outside of the frame and such.

The ratio actually should be able to be set variably. like, just pressing a button for more or less crop. And also maybe being able to move the crop-area up and down to more easily facilitate several end-formats. I personally dislike the whole thing. It should be shot for one format and that's it, but I'm not in the majority on that one.

And I see no reason why scarlet would go and become a 4:3 native sensor...

Oh... and I prefer the shaded box look too, although, the line-version may be easier to see on location-shooting. But again... it would be all software-based and I guess overlays aren't exactly the most time-consuming and prioritized issue at the moment for the team.

You're probably right, I just thought maybe because Scarlet has a still Photo mode it could be 4:3. I also prefer a native 16:9 sensor and LCD display. 4:3 can also be achieved by cropping left and right.

On the other hand a2/3" sensor is usually 4:3. See bottom of this page http://6mpixel.org/en/
If Scarlet has a 2/3" 16:9 sensor it would have a very small sensor since sensor size is always measured diagonally.

Martin I like those better too. On my DVX I have to tape off the LCD to get it :(.

Quit you bitchin. If you were shooting on an Arri 35BL and you wanted eight different ground glasses it would probally cost you around $5,000 for the set.

Ahhhhhhh! That's it. Thank you. The stuff programmed into this firmware keeps blowing me away. The trick is studying it, finding it and knowing how to apply it. But once figured out - life is a beautiful thing.
