I've been testing Monkey Extract and really like the workflow coming out of Avid, but I'm still a little foggy about how to create a multi (video) track EDL.

So far, I've used the "All Video" option for the video track in EDL manager, but when I open the new "grading" EDL that Monkey Extract creates in Color I only have 1 video track.

Is this a problem with Color, or the EDL itself? Am I doing something wrong, or is there a better way to go about this?

That's what the XML is for. The Scan list from Filmscribe creates a master pull for all layers then the XSLT creates a CMX3600 EDL from that pull so you don't have to worry about multilayer EDL, VFX removal etc.

The one thing we are still working on are sequences that are nested, or more specifically have additional V tracks added when stepping into a V track. In that case, I would suggest moving the sequence to its own bin, doing a decompose, drop all .new master clips to a new sequence and make an EDL from there.

See www.avid.com/red and the Avid resources page.

Thanks Michael, that's good to know.

So then my only other question is... If you go the Filmscribe route (with MC 3.0.5) and you take the CMX3600 EDL into Monkey Extract, and then go to Color from there will you get multiple video layers in Color (that match the MC timeline) or will they be mixed down to one layer?

I'm still trying to understand if you ever get multiple video layers in Color (or other grading software) from an EDL, or if that's just not part of the workflow.

The CMX created by FilmScribe and XSLT is designed a pull list and no longer resembles the original composition. For conform and recreation in another program you would have to either export one EDL for each layer or try Automatic Duck to bring the sequence into FCP first.
