  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Multi purpose Monitor

One Brilliance of Red is Modularity, and adjustability...

That being said - if you use a third party monitor, then you don't have the on-monitor assignable buttons.

You do still have assignable buttons on the body however, which you can adjust to your heart's delight in the system/preferences/keymap menu.

My personal favorite non-red monitor for onboard work is the SmallHD DP6.

Super Light, Super Versatile. You really can't go wrong getting the HD-SDI model. It works GREAT. see here:

Seriously. What a great screen.

Re-Reading this I realize you might also be asking if the menus show up on the hd-sdi...

I think this can be enabled to your needs by going to system, monitor, preview, and turning it from 720p to dvi (menus) - I'll borrow a friend's smallhd and test that for you when I get a chance.

That Marshall is NOT a replacement for the RED Pro LCD. At 800x480, it's basically a standard definition monitor. It's very difficult to judge critical focus, especially on wide shots. It is also thicker and heavier than the RED LCD's, so every time you adjust the RED arm the Marshall monitor tends to fall over clumsily. If you just want a director's reference monitor, this is a good option, but I would not recommend trying to operate the camera from the Marshall.

Thanks Julio, do you have any recomendations? How about the DP6? Again something in the lines of replacing a RED Pro LCD.

I don't think I ever mentioned the Marshall...

but in regards to the DP-6 it is a 1280x800 native 5.6" panel -so it actually exceeds the native resolution (pixels per inch) of the Red LCD (not red bashing - just noting the high resolution of the DP6)

I've spent a lot of time looking at small onboard monitors and evaluating them, and I am a big fan of the SmallHD products (althought their 1st gen batteries sucked - they got better over time) I've used it as a secondary onboard with my Red MX and it rocks. Just be sure to get the HD-SDI+hdmi model for the best level of compatibility across camera systems and interfaces.
