Im trying to submit some videos to a stock video site for approval.
they are asking for mp4 .h264

I make a quicktime movie from final cut, and convert it to mp4 in quicktime
it looks like SHITTTTT
its all pixle-ated, downrezed.. terrible looking.
Im trying to give them an HD mp4 file..
any ideas?

Also tried to export as mp4 directly from final cut. same crap.
help please

I'm not in the Apple world, but in the Adobe side of the universe, what I do is convert to H.264 in its highest quality, which is already mp4 extension and will look great, but if you go straight to mp4 it will assume it is for the iphone and will give you the bitrate and quality to match. This is in the Adobe Media Encoder, so I assume that Compressor can do the same of course...

Compressor would let you tweak better and if you don't want to spend time, someone here showed me a preset you can purchased called "CRAM" that has all of the tweaked preset for all different purposes.

works best converting to h264 format first then just pass through to mp4

1. open file with quicktime player (works both on pc and mac)
2. select file-export (movie to quicktime movie)
3. hit options - video settings - compression type h.264
4. quality - high, encoding - best quality, hit ok and save
5. open exported file again in quicktime player
6. select file-export (movie to MPEG-4)
7. hit options - video format - pass through, same for audio, hit ok and save

H264 IS part of the MP4 standard.

I use compressor to make h.264 Quicktime files. I use the QT7 best quality preset and then modify the quality settinngs and size and everything to meet my needs. 1920x1080 and 10000 data rate, AAC audio, best quality scale, etc.

When that is rendered, then like Alex said, open the Quicktime file in Quicktime and export as MP4 with passthru for both video and audio.

I make these MP4 files because they will play on my PS3.

does anyone have first had experience with "Cinema Craft MP" ? I've read a handful of reviews basically saying for software encoding it's the best, but it's $800 bucks.

Is this RED footage? if so, I'm quite impressed with REDCINE - X.

pull in the R3d files, do selects, in/out and then export as h264 at highest quality. you can specify any number of options and it's quite easy. took me a few minutes to figure it out and bang...great quality.

of course you have a million options mp4, prores etc...but if you were asked mp4 or h264---its all in the menu options.

I have had great results with the following steps, using QT Pro.

1. Select File/Export
2. Select Movie to QuickTime form the Export drop down list
3. Select the Options button
4. In the Video box, Select the Settings button. The Standard Video Compression Settings dialog should appear.

5. Configure the Standard Video Compression settings:
Compression Type: H.264
Frame Rate: Current
Key Frames: Automatic
Make sure that the Set Frame Reordering box is checked
Data Rate - Restrict to:1250
Optimized for: Download
Encoding: Best quality (Multi-Pass)

6. Select OK to save your Standard Video Compression Settings.
7. In the Video box, select the Size button. This will bring up the Export Size Settings box.
8. Select 640 x 480 VGA from the Dimensions drop-down List.
9. Check the Deinterlace Source Video box.
10. Select OK to save your Export Size Settings.
11. Select the Sound/Settings button, the Sound Settings dialog should appear.

12. Configure your audio Settings:
Format: AAC
Channels: Stereo (L R)
Rate: 44.100
Render Settings - Quality: Normal
MPEG 4 AAC LC Encoder Settings - Target Bit Rate: 64

13. Click OK to save the audio settings. You will be taken to the Compression Dialog menu.
14. Click OK again to return to the Quicktime Export menu.
15. Click Save to begin Encoding.

VisualHub, a fantastic tool for mac... It's no longer supported, nor sold, but you can still find copies out there. Get your hands on it and your MP4/H.264 troubles are over.

Maybe... Visual Hub is okay. But I've used Compressor for the last 4 years making great Quality h.264 files optimized for download instead of Streaming no issues whatsoever.

If you want H.264 .mp4 Compressor is not a good way to go. I suggest Adobe Media Encoder.
