I'm searching for movies about revenge, such as SLEEPERS, HARD CANDY, IRRÈVERSIBLE, FESTEN or A CLOCKWORK ORANGE.
But I'm not only searching for Rape and Revenge Stories.
Revenge should be the main intension and the obsticale.
Present day Stories would be prefered.
What does come into your minds about that?
Regards
KIM

Old Boy. Korean. Part of a trilogy on revenge. One of the best films I've seen.

+1 Old Boy
Sympathy for lady vengeance
Sympathy for mr vengeance
Brother
Rise: blood hunter
The girl with the dragon tattoo / who played with fire/hornets nest
Harry brown
Taken
Kill bill
v for vendetta
inglorious basterds
true grit
etc...

Most of Clint Eastwood's movies feature revenge as a central theme; Hang Em High, High Plains Drifter, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider, Unforgiven.

A few other obvious ones; Leon, Carrie. Gladiator, Death Wish, Rambo: First Blood, Murder on the Orient Express, The Count Of Monte Cristo and of course, The Godfather

man on fire

and in some ways... the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford

Not about revenge as such, but, After The Wedding deals with a psychology very much in keeping with that of revenge.

The best revenge movie I have EVER seen is a foreign film called Revanche.

I think it's German, and it is the most intense movie I think. Old Boy is definitely more packed with action, but Revanche is just slow and heartbreaking.

Also, try getting "I Saw the Devil". A south Korean film about Revenge. Basically if you want an awesome film about revenge with violence, just go to the South Korean section.

Thank you all...

@Michael: I watched REVANCHE right away yesterday and you are right. It is a beautiful film and I loved the slowness and straight forward camera work.
It's an Austrian Film and strangly I took a somewhat similar approach to a short film I shot in Austria last winter. Would love to hear your opinions:

@Patrick: Watched HARRY BROWN a few hours ago and it didn't really get me into it, but I found it entertaining to watch.

I'm about to watch RED ROAD and will definetly see AFTER THE WEDDING.
Most of the other films I had already seen, but keep it coming, I'm trying to get an overview on this.

One thing I notice in my list is, that it's nearly always Rape or Death that sets up at he beginnig and justifies the Revenge.
Are these really the only two things that deserve Revenge in Storytelling?

revenge is justified when the society in which the hero lives, doesnt give justice to the injustice the hero experienced.

doesnt have to be rape or death, although these are the most common.

Red Road is interesting; I lived in Red Road for three years as an undergraduate and can identify with that movie!

For revenge against society as a theme I would mention Baise Moi

Kim! Watched your short film and it was beautiful. Some of the best stuff I have seen shot on a 5D, so congrats on that!

And im glad you liked Revanche. It's one of my favorite dramas.

And to answer you question on the whole rape/killing revenge plot line, that's how most start off because it seems that are one of the few things that will break a normal person into seeking revenge. That is what is so beautiful about many revenge movies. It shows an awful event happening to a normal person, and it shows how one normal person can be broken by that.

But! if you can think of a way of making a normal person seek revenge without brutality and it's justified, then go for it!

salieri took revenge because amadeus made fun of him infront of the king....a catalysator is of course that he hates amadeus from the very beginning :)
