  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi

Can someone help me in the mount of a movi pro please? It's my first gimbal and I don't want to make mistakes.

I feel that the Movi does not get in the right position when I plug it, did I do something wrong?

I would like to use it with the Helium.

I don't fully understand your question but I might be able to help a bit more if you were to rephrase and be more specific on what you mean by the right position when you plug it in.

Have you watched and followed the instructional videos from the FF guys like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULFmye8aSTE

Additionally, the FF forums are pretty good for getting help and tricks for getting you going. A lot of knowledge there. ( https://forum.freeflysystems.com/index.php?forums/mōvi-pro.64/ ) Account setup is free and easy!

Lastly, the guys at FF are good bunch and will definitely help you out if you send them a message. They are busy though, so I'd look for the answer in the other resources before contacting them.

In fact my movi is perpendicular to the cage and not parallel (so the lens will be directed to a bar of the cage). Is this normal?

What should I do to position the movi in the correct axis (and thus rotate 90 °). Is there a good and bad way to place the movi on the cage or we just plug it in any sense?

I think I place it in the right position but the Roll cursor is completely on the right, in red and I can not get it back in the middle. The cage for the camera is not in a right position. Even the autotune does not work to correct that.

What do I do wrong?

Well, I mounted the camera on the movi and I managed to balance manually so that the camera remains stable without engines.

But when I turn on the movi and start the autotune, it switches the camera upside down ...

Either I'm doing something wrong, or it's a setting that escapes me (it seems to be in Normal mode and the settings are all Good), or my Movi has a problem?

Someone to help me please?

Hi, as you are learning, Movi Pro is not a simple "plug and play" device. You have to have some education and/ or experience with it...

As other responders have said, full manual and tutorials are available on the Freefly website to help get you started. Then there will be more to learn about settings. You might consider hiring a tech or AC who knows the machine a few times to learn from them.

Regarding your immediate problem - rig is sensitive and must be set up correctly to function. Camera has to be exactly balanced such that it will hold/ remain in place no matter where you move it while powered off. Camera should be pointed forward and close to centered and level upon powering up. Also, has to be ABSOLUTELY STILL while booting up. Camera will snap a bit to exact position once booted up if all correct up to there. When you then cycle through menu and activate autotune, the Movi should vibrate for a few seconds one axis after the next; screen will then indicate when auto tune complete. There should be no gross movement of the camera during auto-tune other than vibration. Auto tune will not work if there is anything loose on the rig. Make sure all gimbal lock downs are latched, top and bottom plates are firmly attached to camera, and toad in the hole is properly snapped in and latched.

When powering up the Movi, be sure Mimic and all other external control devices which may be complicating things are off.

A video attachment here of your balance and set up, and of what's going on, would be helpful to determine if the issue is with the set up or with the Movi....

Also, from this post, "red cursor in red completely on the right" is likely indicating that your roll balance is way out. (If you position the camera flat and level with the gimbal off, it should just stay there.) There are 4 directions that need balancing: front to back, top to bottom, side to side, and pan balance. Pan balance lock offs are all the way on top under pan motor and procedure is available in manual and in many videos. If your balance is off in any way, gimbal will be hampered or work not at all. Also, be sure to use ultra thin cables that aren't snagging anywhere.

As I said in the previous post, auto tune only calibrates the motors. It will not correct your balance. If you cannot get correct balance because you run out of slide room, you must adjust weight distribution on your build and/ or add counterweights.

I think I managed to balance the camera on the 3 axes and autotune has allowed to complete this balance.

I have a question about the control screen. Personally I would like to place a SmallHD 5 "or 7" as control screen. I tried to put a cable SDI but it seems to cause problems to the movi, because it's too short or too long or too rigid, what do you advise me as cable please?

Otherwise I have the 4.7" Red screen, but what do I need to put it on the handle (cable, support...)?

Hi, good you were able to balance. To be clear, autotune has nothing to do with balance; your rig must be properly balanced before powering up; and then autotune sets stiffness and filters (calibrates) the motors. Balance must be correct before doing an auto tune.

You must use ultra thin/ flexible cables whenever going from moving gimbal part to stationary part. Cables must not exert any pressure on the rig.

There is a difference between "control screen" and monitor. Red camera can be controlled from Red screen, but not from Small HD monitor. Small HD is monitor only, no control of camera functions. Small HD 502 and 702 are light weight and so good on the rig. 503 works well too. Red monitor is possible to use but important to note that the cable from monitor to camera has control function, is different from simple SDI, must also be ultra lightweight and flexible. Ultra thin SDI cable for Small HD is easily sourced..... B & H, Freefly store, Amazon. I most often use 3' as I can coil up any excess. That cable will run from camera to the monitor, wherever you choose to mount it, eg on your ring or crossbar. Very important cable remains free, does not snag, catch or drag on any moving part of the gimbal.

This is one type of adjustable clamp that will fit a 30mm Movi Ring or an older 25mm cross bar:

Impact Atom Clamp with Ratchet Handle
BH# IMME100

The Atom clamp can grab a range of sizes. Other gimbal purposed clamps may require you to know if you are using 25mm or 30mm supoort device. Movi Pro ring is 30mm.

To this you can attach a small noga arm or other type of articulating mount. You may also want to put on a quick release like Cinelock or Nato rail. Red has it's own articulating base instead of an arm.

If you can manage to mount red monitor directly on top of camera while on gimbal and get it balanced without causing any contact issues (which can work, have done so) then cable type doesn't matter and you can use to control camera. You can then use a second (eg Small HD) monitor on the ring for operating. If you are using the red monitor on the ring for operating as well as camera control, then you will definitely have to get a hyper flexible cable, eg from Media Blackout.

Recommend getting regular/ straight ultra-thin SDI cables for SmallHD monitor, your transmitter (unless mounted directly on camera or gimbal cage) and having some 90 degree SDI adapters on hand for cases when they are appropriate. Always good to have a few of those in kit. For example:

Clamp has 1/4 x 20 and 3/8 x 16 size holes so you can mount whatever male threaded mount you like. Cheaper then the Freefly versions, in the Freefly store, which are great but pricy. The clamps from DJI store for Ronin 2 will also work on the 30mm Movi Pro ring. Better and lighter than Atom clamp for that specific ring attachment application, but cost more.
