  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MoVI competitor reaches Kickstarter goal in first few hours...

I'm toying with the idea of making these for the Epic/Scarlet. How much would you pay to have something like this?

not much, seems like companies are popping up everywhere with similar rigs. Price would have to be competitive with all those other options.

I would pay around $3500 for a version that supports an Epic. That would be a nice price

I talked to BeSteady. The Scarlet/Epic version is further along than I thought. They are interested in doing a Group Buy with us when it's ready.

Their Kickstarter is kicking ass. £77,000+ raised so far!

£81K when I last looked a few mins ago. Are they using Kickstarter to get the funds for raw materials? It seems like it's a pre-order system too... but one that (if all goes wrong) they won't have to deliver on, as KS won't force them into delivering. Just playing devil's advocate on this as others (like teh Defy or the original Movi) are taking deposits/orders via a standard business model.

Having said that, from the footage released so far, I'd say the BeSteady looks better (although it's all in the eye of the beholder) than the Defy, but Movi still (overall) is the top one IMO - and a price that reflects this position too.

But, would certainly like to know more on their Scarlet/Epic version - I'm sure if the price was 'right', a GB would raise significant interest.

It's also good to see the fact they're thinking about packages.

Edit - gone to £83K when I checked after posting... looks like the guys will raise a lot... Brandon, you're the KSG (KickStarterGuru!!!) around these parts, what do you think they'll end up with?

Legally Kickstarter is only a mechanism to facilitate a deal between 3rd parties. They can't be involved in forcing either party to deliver. It is possible to sue if someone doesn't deliver, but that's a big hassle. One drawback to Kickstarter is it's difficult to get your credit card company to refund your money because target dates are typically months away.

I agree. I would love to see a "MoVI vs. BeSteady" hands on video review.

Yeah, if the price is right I am sure they could sell 50 units easily. Maybe close to 100 if the reviews for their DSLR rigs are good.

Easily £350 to £500k. If they get a lot of press then they could get up to £850k+. They really should consider limiting the quantity and letting it sell out. Then they can add a "Waiting list" reward for like £5. Manufacturing, delivering and supporting a large number of products like this in a short period of time is a lot of work and rarely do the "idea teams" behind these products have the experience necessary. In my opinion it would be better for them to have 100 extremely satisfied customers and a waiting list than 400 pissed off customers angry because the target delivery date is missed.

£87.5k now :)

Great answers Brandon!

Glad you see the KS the same way I did (ie not a legally binding contract to deliver)... but I'm sure all will be OK!

Nearly £92K... looks like you're correct with predictions :)

Let's hope they can deliver/fulfill the volume... and then move onto a bigger version for our uses!

First "Stretch Goal" reached. Everyone gets Bluetooth functionality for free. This allows you to make adjustments to the rig from your smartphone.

These guys are running a good campaign.

Brandon,

Can you start a list or collection of names that you could present them for a REDuser GB for the Epic/Scarlet version? And... add my name to that in big bold font :D

Interesting. This space is definitely going to get very competitive.
