Just received my Movecam MM1 mattebox from BandPro the other day. This is my third mattebox in pursuit of the best box in the >$1500 range. I've tried the Arri MMB-1, and the Oconner O-box.

I have to say I think third time's the charm!

It caught my eye at the ASC/IA600 workshop hosted at ArriCSC in NJ not that long ago. I was taken with the build quality right off the bat, and then the rep from bandpro proceeded to set the mattebox on the ground and stand on top of it (he wasn't a small guy). I think being late to the game afforded them the ability to see what else was going on and how to improve as well as avoid pitfalls. I thought the MMB-1 was the most un-user-friendly mattebox I've ever worked with, couldn't get grads at 45deg for starters and everything felt clunky. The O-box was a big step up, but some thumbscrews were hard to get at, I wasn't in love with the tray design and wasn't a fan of the fixed-size sidewings (or that you had to buy a bracket to use them!). The 138 retaining ring was also a little touchy - if accidentally overtightened, it was a nightmare to get it off. And neither were swing-away.

This thing is built solid. Everything (that I could tell) is metal - or carbon fiber. it feels solid in your hand, nothing is sloppy. It might be a touch heavier than the o-box, but that's pretty amazing considering the extra bracketry. It's got top, bottom and side flag brackets out of the box. Everything sits, rotates and slides confidently. There's no lock-off for the rotating tray, but there's plenty of tension and I don't foresee it arbitrarily rotating on its own. The new MM1's are shipping with 138mm filter-capable bellows rings, which also have standard 114mm threads on the back (my reduction rings from my o-box threaded right on). There's also a hight adjustment for the box, which hopefully you wouldn't need to use often but it's nice to make fine adjustments for your setup. It doesn't have the mechanism that pulls the box away from the lens before swinging which you are used too on the the more expensive boxes, but I feel like in most cases you can depress the bellows easily enough.

Adjustable side wings are included. And I actually prefer the folding eyebrow to keep the whole kit as small as possible. Overall I'm looking forward to putting it through the paces.

Disclaimer: Dont work for BandPro, 16x9 or Movecam, just a happy customer.

Cheers,

I bought one of these a couple of months ago. I had thought about getting one of the new premium matteboxes on the market. But, after looking at the Movcam, I saw that this one does everything I need it to do at 1/3 the price. I have been very happy with the purchase.

Hey Guys,

I just bought this mattebox from EVS and can't figure out how the 138mm polorizer filter I bought sits in the back. I'm not certain if it's missing a piece or if I'm just a dummy! I have a job its out on for Sunday and I don't want to let the folks down! Can anyone take a picture of how it sits in yours?

Best wishes,

If you remove the rubber bellows and look at the front of it, you should see an inner ring that is a little less than 1/4" wide with serrations all around it. The serrations are there to give it enough grip for you to unscrew that ring.

Is the 15:19mm Bridge Plate Adapter worth adding?

I'm starting from scratch here.

Maybe an alternative?

I'm very impressed with this mattebox. Construction is solid. Swingaway is smooth. Carbon fiber french flags are a nice touch too

Hi Eric, re the 15/19 bridgeplate for the Movcam -- it does make the mattbox more versatile. It's a very well made piece that's very quick and tooless to install. I have both the Oconnor Obox and the Movcam -- both are great, but for many situations, I find I'm actually preferring the Movcam. They weigh almost exactly the same when similary equipped. Both are very well built.

Hi all, confession to make. Haven't quite worked with a matte-box before. I know what they do. But could someone please explain to me why you'd want rotating trays, and if this Movcam MM1 is inferior considering it only has one rotating tray (and why it would be worse as a result of having only 1 rotating tray). Also, the benefits (and necessity) of 2 vs 3 trays. A producer wanted to rent my Scarlet and it was of the utmost importance that I hire a 3 stage as opposed to a 2 stage MB.

</ help >

This MB seems awesome to me, and looks great for an entry level.

A rotating tray is great for things like a polarizer when the angle you need to polarize shifts... In other words staring at glass window you see crew gear, bogeys anything and it's possible to maybe get them away with a shift in the tray. Also blue sky can change depending... Fool around.

three trays would mostly be for those really in love with putting lots of glass in front of their expensive lenses.
like a pola + ND and then "ir" or "hot mirror ir", or maybe a softening filter (like black mist pro etc..).
They would be better off with using a "hot mirror irnd", but there are of course special needs in some circumstances.

Let me add that I got to bring one of these right off the show floor at NAB this year. Coming from the other side of the planet, such great service is very well appreciated, and it's also proven to be a very good product. Althought I do have to convince every single customer when renting it just cos it doesn't say Arri on the side. They're learning fast though. (the same goes for "scarlet is the same as epic at 4K"..)

I had a 3 stage MB for years. Never used more than 2 filters at a time. So, when I bought the Movcam, I ordered the 2 stage version.

Good to know about the 2 vs 3 trays thing, and rotatable trays. Thanks for the clarification. Seems like a 2 stage should do the trick for most, certainly fits my needs. Thanks!
