The feature I have been working on in Final Cut Pro now needs to be transferred over to an Avid system for additional work.

I need to transfer the EDL as well as all of the logged items in the bins, while retaining the metadata. I have been working with the 2K QuickTime proxies.

I have absolutely no knowledge of the Avid workflow, so the information I have been able to find is pretty much like reading a foreign language.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Take a look at Automatic Duck. I've used it before (albeit on DV projects, where the open codec meant that it was easy to take footage across - no such luck with RedCode, unfortunately).

Pro Export FCP (Exports FCP -> Avid)

Send them an email and find out what the caveats are for RED projects.

I've looked into Automatic Duck and it seems like it will work. My only concern is that I will have to create new QT wrappers for Avid.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try.

I've got a brand new full set of Automatic Duck that I am NOT going to use on my friends AVID. CD's license everything. PM if you're interested.

My solution is this
Create ALE and QT proxies in Red Rushes
Import in avid
Export edl in fcp
Relink to edl

Simple and straight forward.

I'm just curious why you have to change over.

I have a 2k RED proxie project open in front of me right now with 12.5 hours on the time and most of its about 5 to 9 layers high playing smoothly.

Was this a post house or new editor request to move over to AVID mid job.

I have never worked with Avid before, so I have some questions.

1. What is an ALE and how do I create one from Final Cut/Mac?
2. How do I create the proxies? I have only been able to make self contained media with Red Rushes. (I have 30 hours of footage)
3. Do I have to export with Automatic Duck, or can I use the built in export functions in Final Cut?

Why do you need to switch over to avid in this fashion? Are you switching to a Media Composer? Maybe there's a better path.

The switch is because of an editor change request. The new editor will be working on an Avid Media Composer. I have had little to no problems working with the proxies in Final Cut.

One solution is to
  • Convert the footage in RedRushes to Avid DNxHD Quicktimes (very time-consuming)
  • Export ALE in Redrushes.
  • Import Quicktimes via ALE into Avid. (Fairly quick - basically just copying between folders/drives)
  • Export an EDL from FCP.
  • Import the EDL in Avid and relink the sequence to the new media.

The EDL and the ALE needs to have the same type of Tape/Reel for the relink to work.

Avid Log Exchange has a FCP batch list preset you can use to transfer the metadata to ALE.

Try it for a couple of edits first to test the workflow, before you render 30 hours of media :)

To speed things up you could rent a couple of MacPro workstation to handle the rendering. That way it should be done in a week or so.

Redrushes and the latest Avid codec.

Just wondering if you have to go back to Redrushes. The demo I saw, showed Autoduck transcoding to MXF and an AAf file. MXF goes into your media folder, AAF gets imported and there's your timeline. I haven't spoken to Wes regarding this, so maybe Red is different somehow. I would actually love to have a timeline like this to test out our brand, spanking new - native Red workflow on our Avid DS. We're looking into the most efficient workflow possible to get FCP timelines into our online bay and EDL ain't it.

Hi Michael,

This is a bit of a thread hijack but assuming that PEFCP doesn't work any differently on a Red project this should be the simplest workflow you've ever seen.

1. Export AAF using PEFCP out of FPC
2. Import AAF on DS
3. Link to .r3d originals

You don't need the QT files, so there's no point in transcoding them. I'm told (but never tested it) that Wes's AAFs can now be read by DS directly without the 'wash them through MC' step.

You'd also output a low-res QT from FCP of the entire timeline for confirming the conform.

Getting back to the original thread, a similar workflow should work for MC but then you'd have to also transcode all the media.

Regards,
Tone :)

Hey Tone, I have seen the transcode to MXF/AAF from Autoduck for Media Composer. The transcode time didn't seem unreasonable, but I wasn't watching an entire show's worth of media. I wasn't aware that it worked for DS yet. Cool.

i have been working on the same issues.. but we could not get AD to work, it reported wrong project frame rate, lack of info in the header (didn't say what it's missing tho), and i had to toss it

I used an EDL and had my assistant link em all manualy.

It sucks, but i am screening a finished show this afternoon, and we started on Thursday.. so it didn't suck too, too badly (says the guy who was NOT manualy linking clips)

But if you want to borrow any of the stuff i have around ( EDl, XML, AAF, AFE) be my guest....

Ta,

d.
