Old news. They have been testing high-resolution displays for some time.

This file and the latest beta of mountain lion.
I have not checked the other relaise, maybe there already.

thanks

It's been in various beta releases since before Leopard released. Been in most of the developer previews since Snow Leopard testing. With Mountain Lion they're making it obvious because many of the OSX interface elements and several of the included app icons now included high-DPI "retina" versions of themselves in the latest developer previews. LG has a 28" 3840x2160 panel that many think might make it into the next Apple display and iMac. Samsung and Sharp both have 30" 3840x2400 panels, also a possibility. At CES there were tons of high-DPI displays shown for laptops and "ultra books". It's all headed there soon. Windows 8 has lots of high-DPI stuff in it to...

One of Apple's patent applications from about 4 years ago was for high-DPI monitors in GUI applications with all the elements being vector/polygon based for an attempt at resolution independence. For that to actually work, right we would need much higher than double pixel density, but I think we will get there some day.

Been predicting this for some time now and have been trying to put aside some funds for when Apple finally brings next generation towers and monitors to market.

As Jeff and others have suggested, Apple has a history of waiting for a meaningful step forward in available technologies to launch new products. Jobs reveled in creating "category killer" hardware that supports exciting new capabilities that differentiate Macs from mass market PCs. Think Siri on iPhone 4S. Is that milestone Ivy Bridge/4K in 2012? That would be my bet.

Maybe we should start a pool to guess when the first units will ship. If Jeff is correct, and his perspective is well developed, then we are at the mercy of when Ivy Bridge chipsets start shipping in quantity. I'll start by suggesting that Apple would like to have the new hardware in the stores by mid-August if they can procure the parts, November if the chipsets continue to be delayed.

My entry into the pool - August 22nd, 10am PST. Yours?

Cheers - #19

This is all coming soon. Every panel maker in the world is about to unveil 4K screens.

I thought apple had already included 5120x3200 in those sheets, why is it missing here? Can anyone say if those are coming or not?

Hell to the nizzo. There aint no dag gone hardware available for such a high-falutin resolution on a single display!
