  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Motu V3HD

Looks like a good piece. Motu have always had great audio hardware. But it only goes up to 4:2:2 10bit.

Seems like it is the same for the AJA IO HD too. The MOTU seems to have a few more features, but doesnt have apples Pro-Res.

The lack of prores (accelleration) is sorta a deal breaker.

@ the moment I'm also looking forward to the day I can leave DVCPRO HD unused in my workflow.

In studio, we're recording to uncompressed or prores to avoid some of the DVCPRO HD nasties.

I really like my MOTU boxes, though...

Interesting device, but perhaps a bit behind bleeding edge. I wrote about it, and compared it to the AJA IO HD that should be shipping any day now:

http://www.hdforindies.com/2007/06/initial-comparison-motus-v3hd-specs-vs.html

It is most interesting for Windows users (IO HD is Mac only), and most intersting for mobile applications.

It is essentially a DVCPRO HD hardware codec with spectacularly good connection options. A few years ago I would have called this the ideal, bee's knees system, but now with IO HD out it is nice but not the best.

Of course, I'm saying this based on a comparison of the specs - haven't played with either device as yet. Gotta get hands on and play with it to really know.

I want my SDI

I want my SDI

Both the MOTU and AJA units sound very useful - on paper. I look forward to Mike's real world evaluation.

I am very hopeful that the AJA unit will allow me to feed in any supported input (component HD off the HVX for example)- then transcode it in the IO/HD into both HD-SDI for monitoring (my eCinema display is SDI input only) and into ProRes for recording onto hard disk at the same time. I said hopeful :matrix:

I am also wondering if the single link HD-SDI out from the RedOne going into the AJA unit can passively feed out to my eCinema monitor and transcode into ProRes at the same time?

There was a post from Stuart or Rob (Gibby would have the link) a while back that said the SDI ports would feed 1080P 4:2:2 over single link and 4:4:4 over dual link. I wonder if you could run 4:2:2 to the AJA on one link and run 4:2:2 directly to a monitor with the other? Maybe it auto senses when both are tapped so that wouldn't work???

I need to start a list of tests I want to run on #19 this weekend. Of course some features won't be active but it will be fun to see which ones are :detective2:

Im 100% sure the Master HD-SDI connectors are outputting as 2 identical 4:2:2 outputs when not in 4:4:4 mode. I think it will be a menu option to switch between the two modes.

I heard that MOTU will be showing V3HD at NAB right next or in front of Red booth. You guys go and check it out in person.
