  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Motion Control

Has anyone used the RED on a Motion Control Rig?

Yes, it's ok if you don't need accurate multi passes as there is no shutter sync. What are you shooting?

Oakley/ X-Game spot. I need to shoot a 360 wrap around some extreme ski/snowboarders wearing Oakley Googles on Green Screen in Breckenridge. We only have each athlete for 1 hour so time is an issue. I'll be comping in 360 panarama of the mountains for background. Also comping POV reflections in the lenses.

Shooting MOCO with a RED ONE is no different than with other electronic cameras.

i.e. there is a single frame trigger mode and Genlock mode.

What there isn't is a Shutter Sync signal as found on a film camera.

Stuart, I have a timelapse controller that controls a turntable as well as my still camera (via separate cables). My controller outputs a +5v(I think) pulse to trigger my still camera (a Nikon), using a 3.5mm stereo jack with positive on the, tip negative on the ring and ground to sleeve.I would like to get it to work with my Red is that possible? Any ideas on which pins to connect in the lemo. Can I even use this with the Red?

Thanks for any help

Trigger

Trigger

Sure. Thats essentially an equivalent to the GPI trigger function of the RED ONE.

You just short pins 1 and 2 on the lower LEMO 4-pin connector to initiate a single frame record. One frame per contact closure.

Stuart, thanks for the info I will give it a try :-)

.

Hi Stuart,

That is the main reason 35mm cameras are usually used for motion control.
However in the PAL world genlock is at 25fps so multi passes at 25fps can be locked to the moco with a conventional video camera.

Best,

Stephen

Syncing will not be an issue.

Can someone please explain why shutter sync is important for motion control?

I am just curious. :)

at repeating passes (to combine them later) to have the shutter release always at the same time and position subsequently.
The moco takes care of the move - the camera has to shoot the images. Only the shutter sync is the real bridge to link them.

Stuart, Last time I checked the port it was having difficulty keeping up with a 24 FPS... is that fixed now?

Hi,

You want all the passes to be identical, not almost the same/slightly different/very different depending on the speed & dynamics of a camera move.

Curious - will Shutter Sync be possible in new firmware for R1?

Note that Stuart said Red needs a shorting pair to trigger the GPI, NOT a +5V pulse!! You'll have to build a shorting relay interface triggered by your controller voltage pulse.

EDIT: Actually not so sure now after checking the manual. Earlier in the manual it's talking about external contact closures, but talking about GPIO polarity it says this:

"For GPI signals Active LO is the default, which means the GPI command will be activated on a high to low edge of an external control pulse. Set to Active HI to use a low to high edge..."

Clarification please Stuart?

Armed with the info from you and Stuart and asked someone who knows a lot more about these things than me and he said a relay should indeed be used. So he made up a cable for me and I tested today... it worked perfectly.

Just to be clear, the relay shorts between pin 1 and pin 2 of the 4 pin Lemo connector.

thanks for the help
