  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Am looking for a current or soon to be released Motherboard for an i7 8-Core 3.06GHz Processor. Can't afford the leap to 3.33GHz.

Any ideas on a high performance mobo?

Ooo nice! Make sure you go with the i7 Bloomfield architecture (that has the RAM plugged into the CPU rather than Via a southbridge/I-O box) instead of the i7/i5 Lynnfield architecture.

Umm...thanks for the tip. Will look into it. Not quite scrambling around in the darkness but am not 100% up on the HW world anymore. All you need to do is blink and the worlds changed.

it usually take a bit, apple kind of locks down the patent for a bit with intel cause they got deals left and right, and pc hardware CAN release it but there is usually a lag time, the i7 8 cores for mac are pretty new, i remember when 8 core last gen intel came out it was a decent lag time before we started seeing skulltrails and other mobos that supported 8 cores and gave you all the pci express ports and so on that match a mac.

very few at the moment. more will come out in the next 3-6 months

Thanks, very reasonable price as well. Have budgeted for twice that, as a solid foundation. Technically don't need the machine until January but am starting to research HW now, so that I am on top of what is already available and then judge new releases against them.

Any staple sites for HW components that people regularily surf through?

Always the way...always have to wait on the Mac crowd. Fair enough they are a solid bunch.

what are your functions for this system? vfx work? 3d? Editing? the mobo i showed you is just kind of a initial mobo for the next generation of ones. it may not be tricked out enough depending on what you wanna do.

You know that would have been logical to include that in the original post. The deal is that this station will be used for offline/online RED editing (RED-Splicing as I like to call it!!), 3D modeling, 2D fx and preliminary grade (final grade will be done via projector on another machine - which is not in my house). The 3D rendering will be done on a 8x Quadcore render farm but will be interesting to see how this machine works on a render, but obviously don't want it tied rendering.

Tim, check out my Monolith thread for a lot of info on just what you need.

Thanks for that...had a quick goosey (gander) at that - looks like a beast of a system. Will have a proper look now.

You might consider the Xeon version. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182176&cm_re=x8dah-_-13-182-176-_-Product

This is the MB I just purchased. It has all PCIe slots. 2 x 16, 4 x 8 and 1 x 4.

I am going to assemble it all this weekend. I went with 2.8 GHz CPUs, 24 GBs of tripple channel RAM, REDRocket, etc...

Looks hot...see that is my balance - do I go for a 2.8GHz and get more RAM or go for the 3.02! The logic is that most of the platforms I use really are more RAM dependant than processor speed and I am not altogether sure what the real output difference is between them. To be honest if the time difference and performance is more or less negligable then I can just head for the 2.8's. Will have to do a bit of research and find some comparisons. As with most Indie's I have more time than i do money...and the freelance work I do affords me plenty of access to various houses and plenty of time.

so you basically wanna do a little bit of everything. so your gonna need a bigger power house if u really wanna see substantial differences.

xeon will be the way to go as it does sheer mathematical computations for better then ur normal processor brand.

don't forget video card if ur doing 3d rendering, that will take advantage of ur GPU more then any other piece of software, also if u wanna do heavy compositing. diving into the FX series of video cards will be helpful.

you'll definetely wanna hold out for a mobo that has plenty of pci express 16 slots so that all your cards will work at max efficiency. you can also look into magma express box posted by sanjin a few days ago, it will let u do more if u want a all in one system.

lots of ram!
windows 7
and fast raided disk arrays. if you want a power house that's a way to go.

and another question, y not trick out a mac? all these things will cost almost as much...

and side note, red dwarf is one of my favorite shows of all time :)

All makes sense. I was thinking of swapping out some HW from my other workstations to help pull it all together...graphics cards et al.

Whether to go to a mac is always on my mind. It doesn't make sense in that most of the companies I work with, strangely, don't work on Mac, they are mostly PC driven, but the grade suite is mac.

Lot of things to think over. Never had a mac personally, although have worked with them plenty of times.

[even after 20 years I still have a staple diet of RED Dwarf...it was a pleasure to see the Easter Special shot on RED. I know that Graeme Nattress is a big Dwarfer too!!]
