  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

More FL's comig to the Pnachro/I set

Oh sweet goodness. I want. When do you suppose this will be announced?

I hope they come out with a 12mm, 14mm, 40mm, 135mm, 180mm.

I've spoken with the reps from cooke. they really have no plans to go any wider than the 18 mm, 180 or 200 might be a possibility.

The 40 and 135 are definitely the most logical next step. Then maybe a 65 to match S4's and 5i's.

As of now, I believe 5i's are 18-25-32-40-50-65-75-100-135

I would not expect Cooke to release any Panchro/i focal lengths which are not already covered in the 5i series first.

Wide lenses are super hard to design and are specialty focal lengths... I'd suspect there wont' be any wider than 18, and if you need that focal length, you just rent an S4.

I'm super pumped for the 40mm and 135mm, hope it happens.

Hmmm ... except that won't work with Epic since S4's don't cover 5k on the wide end. Yet another reason why I advised Cooke to slightly redesign some of the wider S4 focal lengths (and possibly 5i, not sure about coverage) to be fully compatible with 5k. (I'm partly joking about "advising" Cooke, sounding kind of like Sanjin)

I mean, the MP's cover 5k down to 12mm. Thus I believe the fact that S4's or 5i's to not cover at the wide end is a big reason why MP's and UP's have been chosen so much more than Cooke for the vast majority of work with the Epic.

are you sure S4's don't cover? Have you tried it?

I've not shot with Epic yet and I really don't shoot much outside of Alexa and MX, so I'm not familiar with Epic... but regarding your statement I think it might be a double standard.

MP's and Ultra's are advertised as covering super35.... never has Zeiss said they were 5k Epic.... thus it's not that the lens was designed to cover but rather that it just covers. I believe your conclusion is based on looking if the image circle covers. Many lenses advertised as covering s35mm also cover 5k, if you extend the manufacturers intention. Meaning lenses that were designed for S35mm can many times cover more than, because that is how the image circle covers.

For instance, the Cooke Panchro/i 75mm and 100mm cover Full frame, 5D sized sensor... but was it designed to? No. Were master primes supposed to be used outside super35mm? Probably not... but do some of them do? Yeah.

Point is, I've not tested the cooke S4's on bigger sensors over super35mm , but since MP's weren't designed for s35mm+ sensors, but happen to cover, I wouldn't be surprised if S4's did as well. Again, I've not done it, but I'd be surprised if many did not.

Do the MP's on the wide end cover? Wide angle lenses are usually the lenses which don't have as much wiggle room on the projection circle. I'd be willing to think that Cooke S4's might be similar to other S35mm lens sets.

Not to be combative, but Epic has been around for less than a hot minute, so really what lenses have been chosen thus far seems to be irrelevant, especially because Zeiss is already the forerunner in lenses. Cooke makes a mean lens, but worldwide, zeiss products are on more shows, so I'm not sure that's a factor I'd take into consideration.

That is my thought, what is yours?

Zeiss CP's, and Cooke Panchros are some of the only lenses that in my opinion "cover" 5k. I'm not talking about image circle, im talking about manufacturer accepted performance within a certain frame size. Yes technically MP's cover 5k, but whats the resolution loss, consistency and illumination roll off at the edges of that "frame". I'm sure its fine, but it may suck to get a surprise like, on the 16mm MP the corners a mushy or have CA. I havent tested it, but im just saying, it just so happens that the lenses cover, Zeiss may never have intended you to be using that portion of the image circle. It may not be as awesome as the middle.

Cooke designed the iPanchros to work with epics frame size.(stated in the brochure to cover "new RED S35 format") CP's are full frame lenses. Designed to perform well out at Full frame size, far surpssing the boundaries of the 5k size. This makes sense as they are both very new lenses.

I haven't personally tried it (I've briefly played with Epic, but haven't rented and don't own - yet).
In terms of S4, I am just going off what Mark and Dino tested.

And yes, I agree with you - it's kind of an unfair comparison Arri/Zeiss UP's and MP's are more prevalent
in the rental market than Cooke, especially when you consider that the 5i's (Cooke's version of MP's) are
barely available for rent while Master Primes are all over the place.

Still, there are enough S4 sets and Epics out there to think that someone would have put them together
and posted footage or at least a post about it, but I haven't seen it. So I can only assume that limited coverage
might be a factor in that. I could be wrong, I should have clarified that it was speculation ....

I get what you're saying. Just because MP's and UP's "cover" on the wide end, it doesn't mean it's optimum.
However, given all those who have been using these lenses with the Epic (Mark Pederson on multiple features,
Spiderman, Tom Lowe, Ketch, on the Tattoo short, David Mullen on his Big Sur feature, etc) I would reason
that wide open performance on 5k -- even on the wide end, is still very good.

Again, I haven't looked at it on a projector and there are those who have said the new Leicas beat out the MP's
in this regard ... but I would still assume it's very good.

Like you guys, I love the Cooke look and would LOVE to see the new 5i's on the Epic and hope they have coverage
across all fl's ...

Anyway, back to original thread - can't wait to see more Pancrho + Epic footage, seems like a match made in heaven
and these new focal lengths help to round out the set.

Clay Haskell shot some epic/panchro footage that made my heart hurt its so beautiful... they are a SPECTACULAR combo......

im doing my first epic shoot on wednesday BTW.... :)

my question exactly!
