  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

2k scaled?.... hmmm jim did say that he never thought he would shoot 2k but that he found out it was a great solution. So if he could shoot 2k with a full sensor view.... that might be it.

we know the full 4K sensor area can be clocked at 60fps max. So 2K should have the potential to go much higher than 75fps. Its a 1/4 of the sensor area it may go in excess of 200fps assuming you record to reddrive. Of course heat may be a factor limiting this, but it wouldnt strike me as an impossibility.

The happiest day of my life would be that it's anamorphic de-squeezed preview in order for you to see the image when shooting with anamorphics and higher speed rates on 2K. That would be the coolest fxxking thing ever and I wouldn't know what to do or what to say. It would completely undermine all the competition!!! And of course a little more latitude :weight_lift:

The 2K sensor area is capable of 120Hz. The restriction that keeps that full rate from being achieved is the processing ability of the other components in the pipeline. RED mentioned 2K @ 100fps as an ideal target a few months back. We'll see what happens I guess.

anamorphic recording ! it's coming !

We can already shoot anamorphic on RED. But with current builds, there is no anamorphic compensation for monitoring output. And in post the frames have to be cropped and scaled, not just scaled horizontally, which means we are inefficiently recording extra data that will just be thrown away. Dedicated anamorphic modes in camera would be great -- without recording the extra data, that means longer record times or potentially higher data rates. Compensation in the viewfinder or monitor outputs would be wonderful too. I'm sure all this is coming at some point.

All of the "magic" image stuff has been moved to build 15. Build 15 also includes multiple outputs live. Good news.

Build 14 is "landmark" for other reasons. It has two big surprises. Features that were never promised. I personally like both of them so much that I now shoot them as my standard. It is only a few days away.

This is a good time for RED. We are delivering cameras. The cameras boot everytime. They don't overheat and they shoot in extreme cold. Most every feature has been enabled. Customers are happy (for the most part).

We are not perfect, but we have worked so hard at this that we are getting well past the "scam" point. Thanks to all for your patience. We have tried to listen. Given our small team, I have to say that I am very proud of where we are given the development time. And we are not done...

BTW... we have big plans for 2008.

Jim

Thanks for the update, Jim. We have been busy here shooting and haven't had the time to stop in the forum as much right now, but are very much looking forward to your upcoming surprises! :)

Thanks again,

I'm trying to think of what features could be in builds 14/15 that would merit all this advance hype & secrecy! It's nothing... sexual in nature, is it Jim?

As you are AKABAKA you should know it for sure :) .

Jim's a bigger tease than my first girlfriend. Definitely nothing sexual.

:innocent:

Anyword if build 14 is coming this week?

I have a feeling that 14 is going to introduce new shooting 'modes'.. it's the only thing I can think of worthy of such a large release besides actual image quality..

Got my RED Friday. Love it!!!

We set it up with primes lenses and a 17" Panasonic monitor on HD-SDI. the view on monitor does not cover the entire lens, seems to be scaled, showing about 2/3 of the focal length.

Does anyone know camera setting to see full coverage?

I have not done a lot of reading or investigating, just hot to get it up and running. So excuse me if I am asking something very basic

well either your running 2k (or 3k if you have build 14) - does it say 2k or 3k on the back display? or its on 'focus check' either of which will enlarge the image. read the user manual and hit one of the user keys under the roll button on the side to disable focus check and set the camera to 4k to "use the full focal length" of the lens.
