Just venting because I am annoyed that I missed the great deal on half-priced barely used Scarlets a couple years ago. How about another bunch of nearly brand new Red Scarlet cameras please.

I am less comfortable buying an expensive camera off a forum then from a camera manufacturer.

The transfer of ownership of a used RED camera (I think it's $750) is a must if you want the firmware and sensor upgrades - but there's also the evaluation fee which leaves you with a 3 month warranty. And that should give you a pretty safe choice when buying from the forum.

You have to arrange with the seller who pays the fee. And it's also safer to arrange with RED that money is exchanged after the transfer before they ship the camera. (or similar) I never needed to do that yet, but that's as far as I know how you can make it work. Ketch or other guys know all the details ;)

from the RED FAQ:
“Customer” is defined as an entity who obtained Red product by other means than directly from Red. Product re-certification is only available to a Customer and is limited to a one re-certification per Customer upon a change of ownership. As part of the process, RED will register the Product to the new Customer. A Red Re-Certified Product Warranty is valid for a period of ninety (90) days for the camera and camera accessories after the warranty is accepted by the Customer. Red Re-Certified Product Warranty is not available for Digital Media and Batteries. Customer may be eligible for the Extended Warranty if a product is Re-Certified within one year of original purchase, for an additional cost. Red Re-Certification Product Warranty is subject to Warranty Limitations listed in Section 6a above.

BT is something they offered only when certain events happened.
There might be another offer about a year after Dragon shipped, similar to what happened with the RED ONEs.
But it wouldn't be a smart business decision to offer these all the time. So don't expect this to happen on a regular basis.

EDIT: check with the Bomb Squad for the transfer of ownership and evaluation procedure and fee. They'll walk you through it.

found the info I was originally looking for:

RED RE-CERTIFIED PRODUCT WARRANTY

All Electronic Products (e.g. Red One, Red LCD, Red Pro LCD, Red EVF) that are not possessed by the original Buyer may be sent to an Authorized Red Service Center for an evaluation fee of $100. Red will provide a quotation for the re-certification of the product to existing Red product specifications at time of repair. The Customer is responsible for all costs associated with such re- certification, such as troubleshooting, diagnosis, repair, test, calibration, and shipping costs. The evaluation fee will be applied to the cost of the re-certification if the cost of the re-certification is greater than the evaluation fee. Upon completion of re-certification, customer may be offered a Red Re-Certified Product Warranty and/or a Red Armor Extended Warranty for an additional cost.

Basically this means:

3 month warranty for $100 (+if needed: any additional repair/work they have to do for that particular product to make it RED approved)

It's safe to buy a used Scarlet on here. Just check the history of the person selling it, the serial number and the condition. Once Red evaluates it and sends it back to you, it will be in perfect working order. Then, when you have the $, you can upgrade that cam to an Epic and then Dragon and so on. Just make sure the serial number is upgrade eligible before you buy.

I bought my Scarlet used on Reduser. As long as you make sure the person is legitimate you will be fine. But a 90 day warranty can end up screwing you over if a board breaks. Looking back I should of bought new with Red Armor. I ended up blowing 500 on a board repair that my insurer couldn't cover...

At least I got a decent warranty on my trade up, but if you really expect to buy this along with those lenses in the next 6-12 months you may want to wait on purchasing the sensor until as late as you can get away with. The MX prices I predict on the used market will likely fall when Dragons start shipping in high volumes. Plus Red may sell all the BT Scarlets guys like me traded in for Epics. I suspect they will at some point...
