  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Monstro Low Light - Playing with Fire.

Thanks Zeb!

Another day another way. Qualifying yesterday Redcine X-ing today.

If no one wants to be bothered with an r3d, here's what some noise reduction, philmColor strix, and Rec.709 Medium Contrast/Very Soft highlight roll-off can do. Processed at 6400 ISO and 4000K for some warmth.

(2 GB download, DNxHQX 10 bit 4K)

I'd say it handles it pretty well. Especially when you remember Monstro uses the new ISO recalibration, so it'd be the equivalent to yesterday's 12,800 ISO.

What player is required for this? Mac QT no workie

Yeah, I getting "We're processing this video. Please check back later" when clicking the provided link.

I doubt it would play in your browser, you gotta download it directly.

It's a .mov wrapped DNxHQX 10-Bit 4K straight out of Resolve.

Edit: actually it looks like it will play a 1080p compressed version in the browser (I'm on Firefox), but that's not any better than YouTube quality at that point.

Here a pushed version to try to retain all the DR of the sensor.
I'm actually impressed to see the DR of the monstro even if the noise structure is a bit different from the Dragon (wich I prefer).
You can even see the people in the dark at the bottom of the picture.

All done in RedcineX. IPP2, denoise, DEB and curve.

And one quick Resolve

I'd love to see the Resolve settings that allow the flame detail retention, while being able to see the crowd, without a mess of noise . . . with no Qualifiers. That has to be a composite

I've used qualifier for this one...

Well done. Trick is to not have any hard edges on the Qualifiers while still affecting only the target areas. Seems like you've accomplished that. Did you use HSL or 3D? Wonder if this grade approach would hold up in motion. What did you use for noise reduction in Resolve?

No noise reduction applied only the R3D developping noise reduction to max (I don't have the Resolve Studio version ;-) ).
I'm also curious about the motion. But I've tried to select carefully the qualifier area. But motion would tell if I clipped the levels at one range zone. Though I don't think so...

Zeb,

my only gift is that I just keep trying, thats all.

So you ran the file through RCX first then imported it into Resolve as a R3D with metadata adjustements? I don't use RCX so am not famil with the workflow. Seems that would be time consuming but produce the best result for RED files. Was trying to somehow key in the flames with an two clip HDR approach, but the qualifier route, if done properly, seems the quickest and least likely to produce halos 'n stuff

Zeb,

Thanks a lot man! I really appreciate it!

Here is the Image that came out of RedcineX with no noise reduction.

Thanks! It's the HDR here that is the challenge. Getting the crowd to show up, talent with decent skin tone, with flame detail and no noise is pro-skillz

Not gonna say I told you guys so but I told you so (wink wink) . . . nothing wrong with the OP's files or acquisition given the shooting environment and subject matter. It's the grade that got fucky.

I would have tried to shoot scenes that were well lit with ambient (as in shooting away from the sunset - not into it and wondering why all the faces are dark) to reduce the contrast ratio. I would have set the camera to not clip, perhaps trade resolution for a better RC, and hope for the best in post. That all said, seems the current crop of RED sensor tech is better at several things.

At 8K it's too bad RED doesn't have the pixel doubling that Phase did whereby you combine 4 pixels into one through a menu setting. So you go from 8K to 4K but pick up like 2 stops of sensor sensitivity and therefore noise reduction. But then my Phase is an ISO100 sensor on a good day - strictly for tripod mounted stills

No the Resolve grade was based directly from the R3D, in the" Camera Raw" menu you can denoise the R3D. I never develop in RCX if I grade in Resolve.

So you did all your RAW adjustments in Node 7?
