  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Monkey Extract vs. Crimson Workflow

I'd also like to hear more on this.

I can't speak form Monkey Extract (though I hear good things).

Crimson currenty has the following features:
Import FCP XML sequences

then

Transfer to Redcine XML and create intermediates for Redcine.

or

Modify framing and color information and transcode via Redline, QMaster etc.

Then Roundtrip a modified FCP XML.

Let me know if you have any specific questions. You can download a demo at http://www.crimsonworkflow.com.

I have never used Monkey Extract. But there is one feature about Crimson that I love. You can save the entire Crimson "project" as a file, which can be opened later. When you're dealing with managing hundreds of clips, it is incredibly useful to be able to go back months later and see exactly how all of the clips for an edit were processed, including all the settings related to color, sharpness, resolution, and handles.

Last summer I used Crimson to prep DPX sequences for conforming in Smoke, and we would usually process everything to 1080p with REDLOG color space. If the online editor discovered that he needed to do an extreme blowup on a shot or two, it was very easy to reopen the Crimson project and change the resolution parameters for just a few selected clips and reprocess them at 4K.

This kind of flexibility is invaluable when it comes to managing a RED project. We were only working on some commercials at the time, so I can only imagine how helpful this project management capability would be on a long-form edit.

We've been using monkey extract for quite some time, and I perfer it over Crimson, mainly because it is much simpler to use right out of the box. (easy to train other people here how to use it)

The latest update allows you to use Qmaster to set up a render farm, which we also use quite a bit, and it works great. The support I get from the monkey guys is top notch as well.

We typically process out 1k ProRes files for the offline, and then either collect a FCP project or EDL, and conform to 1080p. Works great for us.
