Monitors, Monitors, Monitors...

I am looking for a good source of information on all monitors. It seems like new monitors are coming around all the time. What is a really good monitor that I can trust. If I'm trying to change the look, in camera, and the monitor is magentauke: or has low contrast I really don't know what my results will be.
You spend 20K - 70K on a camera and accessories, but what are your monitoring it on? The :leaving:CRTs disappeared one day, and these new solid state monitors popped up all over. Engineers say they don't like the flat screens. Well...:willy_nilly:

Or are all monitors so good that discussion is not needed for them? :nonod:

A monitor properly calibrated and in the intended viewing environment should suffice. Of course u have brightness issues and off axis viewing considerations. Rec.709 is a lot easier to deal with, dci or P3, a bit more tricky...

If you are talking on camera monitor...well, honestly, you just have to learn by experience. When someone tosses the term 'calibrated monitor' out there, they are implying a controlled environment for the monitor. If you take a high end, expertly calibrated monitor from a controlled lighting grading suite, and put it on a coffee table with a window letting the morning sun beam directly on it--it isn't 'calibrated' anymore. An on camera monitor has to move through all kinds of environments, from the dark of night to the bright noon sunlight of a midsummer day. Every change in ambient and amount of direct light on the glass is going to change perception.

Experience, testing, familiarity with all the pieces in the monitoring chain, testing, plus following your work through post to see what worked, what surprises happened, and then feed that back into your knowledge base to use next time. And did I mention testing? That camera monitor is there for judging composition and framing...the exposure and color is 'preview' at best.
