The RED monitor suddenly decided to display thousands of thin horizontal lines instead of an image. We have already tried unplugging the monitor and plugging it back in, rebooting the camera, and giving the camera time to cool down. None of this has worked. Suggestions? (time is URGENT)

Hmmm... You probably have tried un- and replugging the monitor cable, wiggling it a bit - check that there is nothing in the connectors. Also check that it is connected to the right port, and not the EVF port.

Sorry that I can't be of more help...

Update

Update

I don't think it has anything to do with the monitor. The monitor seems to be working fine (it's displaying everything as it should, including a histogram that accurately reflects the messed up image).

I feel like there is something wrong with the information that the monitor is getting, which means the problem may lie with the sensor. In case it helps I have included some pictures of what we're looking at (see attachments).

Have you contacted Red Tech Support?
We had the same thing happen to our Red s/n 1420.
We were shooting in the cold 27ºF.
When our camera was warm it worked!
We had to send the body back to Red. Have not re-tested in cold yet, not sure what Red repair/replaced.

Try to work it out on DVI on a DVI monitor of course...
If images are recorded correctly you have an issue and you should send the cam back. Check your images on red alert.
I had an issue with the monitor aswell, not something you can fix on set but the camera was fully operable. sorry.

New update

New update

I will try to answer all of your questions. Before that, another update. We installed Build 17, and now instead of those bars, the image is just black. Anytime we try to Record or do Black Shading calibration, it gives us a ROCKETIO_FAULT error. I have searched for posts about this error on this forum and elsewhere, and no one really seems to know much about why it pops up; there are a variety of reasons guessed.

P.S. Thanks for moving my post to the correct forum.

Matt we got the "ROCKETIO_FAULT" error also. We were on build 16 and had the same image in our viewfinder as your post #5.

Hi Matt,

I'm having exactly the same kind of problems. That very pattern on build 16 and the black monitor on B17. Until reading your post the only thing I was sure of is that it is a cold weather issue so... Now I'm not sure about that - temperatures here are running between -1˚C and +10˚C not very cold but not warm.

I first had problems a few weeks ago after installing B17 and when I was shooting outdoors. I assumed the problem was B17 related but the problem when away for a week until I was shooting outdoors in the cold again. Since then I've been treating as a climate issue. I reinstalled B16 and got slightly different symptoms.

Whatever is going on it doesn't seem to be very consistent so I've gotten very methodical on its ass.

Today I did 30 power cycles indoors with only one boot hang - I restarted after about a minute of hanging. Then I went outside and did 13 power cycles out of which I had 3 boot hangs and 10 crashes ( different monitor pattern to yours on this occasion but "rocketio fault" on record). Then I changed the fan setting from "quiet" to "variable" and did ten straight power cycles without a hitch.

I don't think the problem is solved yet but it is affected by the climate and the fan setting.

This morning I had the camera shooting outside on a frosty morning with no problem (variable fan) but when I went inside after a while I had a sequence of boot hangs - couldn't get the camera to boot. Left it and came back to it and it was fine.

I've done some tests with batteries and DC because of something I read on Reduser but I didn't detect any issue around power.

Please keep me informed.

Matt,

Who's camera do you have? Did everything work out?

I am having the same kind of problems here in Sweden. Shooting outdoors -6° C. After a while I got the ROCKETIO_FAULT in viewfinder. After reboot the stripes of death in VF. Went home and had the same stripes in LCD. When camera had been inside for a while I could boot without problem.
This is a serious problem and stops us using the camera as it was intended; shooting nature.

Tried again. Same result; stripes. Can't shoot.
There must be a fix for this.

Pict,
Contact Red on this issue.
We had the same problem and Red asked to send the camera back.

Thanks Priit

What is the best way to contact them in this matter?

On the left side of Red's support homepage is some forms to fill.
You will get contacted in a day usually.
