Folks,

I am trying to set up my FCP to edit the proxies of some Red-shot footage. Following the PDF document that BrandonK posted I have dragged the proxies into FCP (obviously having installed the RED QT codec first!) and sure enough FCP appears to recognise them. When I drag them into a sequence and choose to adjust the sequence settings to the same as the clips the sequence adopts Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) as the compressor, not REDCODE. Is that how things should be? I need to render these clips before I can work with them - which is better than processing them all through REDCine but still an annoyance. Also, when I have rendered them my monitor output is only displaying in the top left corner of the screen whereas the frame was previously full i.e. when I browse through the unrendered timeline the stills displayed on the monitor are full screen.

Can anyone shed any light on i) whether I am getting the expected behaviour from my codecs, and ii) how I can persuade the system to play out to monitor properly?

Cheers

You need to make sure the Sequence settings in FCP match the format you rendered to via REDline or Redcine. That is the first thing we need to check.

That is correct that proxies playback as ProRes. Then even with Mac Pro 8 Core, you have to go to RT settings on the left top of the timeline, then set the RT as unlimited RT. Proxies are not quite safe RT so you have to make it more forgiving on the RT.

Depending on the video hardware you are using, video output setting and what the timeline output differs and won't play back on your video monitor. Sometimes it's QT7.5 compatible issues depending on the video hardware you use (or are you talking about Cinema Desktop function?).

I'm using Matrox MXO most of the time, but if I use QT7.5 then if I lower the video playback quality then the video output from MXO does not work, but if I put it back on "high" then it starts working. However, I don't have this problem when I use another system I setup with QT 7.4.3. More over, I don't have this problem playing back through MOTU V3HD.
Often cases, it is easier and faster without external video hardware for editing with proxies. Just think of it as real offline ediiting, then I use Crimson to take the edts to REDCINE, do the first light and output ProRes422HQ or Cineform to create online (or near online) clips to edit back in FCP.

There are other ways to work like using Log and Transfer plugin. Lately I prefer using proxies instead of Log and Transfer to avoid making excess flies on the hard drive because I have to work on many TVCM jobs.
