  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi all. . .

A couple of days ago, we noticed something very strange in our RED One (MX) that we've not seen before. For some inexplicable reason, the image on the monitor and EVF are both "pushed in" and clipped off on both the left and right sides of the frame during playback (but not recording!).

Even stranger, the image coming out of the HDMI port is fine. . .it shows things as they actually are whether during playback or recording.

Has anyone else seen this? And can anyone suggest a solution? We did not change the build or anything else on the camera. It just started happening for some strange reason.

Thanks.

Stephen

OKAY. . . I have identified the problem. . . but it shouldn't be a problem.

When I set HD-HDI output to 1080p, the LCD and EVF don't show the correct field of view on the camera. Instead, they clip all of the edges on the monitor (top/bottom/left/right) on playback only. But, again, the HDMI output is fine in either playback or recording.

Why would setting the HD-SDI output effect the monitor output??? And can I get back my actual field of view while still keeping the 1080 setting on my HDMI output on playback?

Stephen

Could your monitor be showing the 1080 image as pixel for pixel? And, assuming it's a 720 monitor, it's showing you a 720 "window" of the 1080 image. Of course, when you hit record, the output on the R1 reverts to 720p, fixing the problem. And, of course, HDMI remaps the image to whatever the monitor wants to see.

Sounds to me like someone might have accidentally hit a button on the monitor, changing it from scaled to 1:1.

Hey there, Shane. . .

It's definitely not 1:1 pixels. It's not that big. It's literally the difference between 1080p and 720p, but there is nothing in the RED manual about that HD-SDI setting at 1080p resulting in strangeness on the EVF and LCD.

What's doubly strange is that RED recommends that we consider 1080p to be non-function for HDMI, but, in point of fact, it works great (effortlessly switching between 720p and 1080p on every LCD television we've tested!). But here is a case where the 1080p setting screws up not the HDMI, but, rather, the RED's own LCD and EVF! Very strange.

Now, if there is some setting for making sure that the LCD and EVF always stay at 720p, I'm not aware of it. And this is only on playback. I think it is a software glitch, but surely someone using 1080p on HD-SDI has experienced this phenomenon before.

Thanks!

Stephen

That is normal behavior for playback image, and has been since 1080p playback was first enabled.

If you want to see full frame playback in the EVF/Monitor, then you have to have the camera set at 720p playback.

Tim

Okay then. . . problem solved. I hope RED fixes this glitch in a later build.

Thanks for the information.

Stephen

EVF and LCD in 1080p playback.

EVF and LCD in 1080p playback.

It's not a glitch though,it's the way it works.

You can get full raster 1080 images on the HDMI and HD-SDI outputs, but the RED-LCD and RED-EVF will show you the central 720 area of the image only...

In my opinion, that's a glitch, Stuart. You may not think so, but the rest of us do. Anytime you can't see the whole recorded image, that's a problem. Fortunately, we can see it just fine on the HDMI output, but still. . .
