  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Monitor extension cable

Why not just use the HDMI cable with an HD monitor? We do, and it works just fine. . . and for $30.

How does a cable maker know the pinout of the Lemos on the LCD?? Can you point me towards one Brigham??

Thanks Jim.

I'm sure we could physically make the cable and we have REDs so we don't need you to send a cable. We could make you one but I cannot assure you that it would work until after we made it. The DC voltage pushed across those pins is not particularly high, so this can be a problem over long cable runs as resistance builds up. It is possible that the camera can push out a bit more to compensate and there are a few cable lengths available from RED so that means that there is some headroom in there, but we have no idea how much. It might work ad it might not. It might be fine on one camera and not another. It might fail as your battery begins to run down. I have no idea, but we could make you the cable and you could see if it works. But you'd have to buy it either way. Ad it won't be cheap either, as we'd have to pinout on every one of those little leads to no what the wiring pattern is and then actually solder all those little suckers (so many and they're so damn small!), and we'd have to see if we have the appropriate multicore cable on hand. And those Lemo connectors aren't cheap either.

We can do it, but as you can guess from above, my suggestion is that you're better off following the suggestion to simply purchase another monitor to stick on the end of your jib. I've seen some models of cheap computer monitors mentioned on the forum for as little as a few hundred bucks. This cable would cost you at least that much and this way you'd actually own a spare monitor.

Yes, they can be used interchangably. The only difference is an EVF cable has two right angle connectors and the LCD cable has only one.

I glanced over at the RED.com store and a 10' cable is only $260 brand new. Best bet is to just buy one from RED.

Using the Red on a wing mount, I tried to get a longer LCD cable. Red will not release the cable specs, and claimed that longer than 10' could cause damage. (don't know to what component). I suspect this is a conservative figure , and would love to have a 14' cable that could give me shutter speed control (via EVF). Any wisdom, Mitch?

Depending on the design of the circuit a longer cable could conceivably cause damage and this would be to an internal component of the camera. If RED says don't do it then don't. I do wonder if there is a way to access the shutter via any of the other ports on the camera.

Sorry to hijack, but does Abel have the bolts for the EVF cable right angle. Can't get them from RED and the supplier they referred us to is pretty much non-responsive to little orders.

I doubt it but you could give a call to our Service Dept. and they'll check. I think you need the cap aka nut, as opposed to what you're caling a bolt. It is the cover piece that goes on the rear of the right angle which encloses it and holds the damn thing together, correct?
