  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Monitor Calibration

agreed. probably the cheapest solution is to have someone calibrate your reference monitor as the probes are way expensive, and have them create a LUT for you, and load it into something like a HDLINK pro. a davio would be a better solution though if you got the money. for your LCD monitor, a simple spyder would do the job, there would be no true way of matching it to a reference panel since they work off completely different gammas, color space, and bit depth.

An i1-D2 probe is great for such displays, and is not expensive. The generated LUT can indeed go into HDlink Pro boxes - I use them a lot - and for such a use there is no benefit in using a Davio - just a lot more money spent...

It is also easy to match to a reference panel, within the limitations of the actual display (and the gamut of most LCD displays is in excess of Rec709), and this is a standard function of LightSpace CMS. Gamma is no problem at all. Bit depth really doesn't come into it.

I have accurately matched a lot of similar displays, and they can be very accurate. The main variation is black level (such LCDs tend to have lifted blacks) but in reality that is a minor issue.

Steve... Got my attention here...

But first... Calibration on set and for post may be two very different animals...
I prefer "referencing" for what I need to do on set.

What is the pricepoint of a solution like this?
Could I use the HD-link to run SDI panels with LUTs as well, or only HDMI/DVI?
Say I needed to feed a Dreamcolor, a plasma and a projector with P3-XYZ for the projector, P3 emulation for the Dreamcolor and REC 709 for the plasma...

Would that be possible?

And how would I go about burning in the LUTs I had (in case I needed to do so...) in say Resolve?

I have been thinking of the Davio for quite a while, but this sounds interesting, too...

Calibration on-set and for post should be exactly the same - the displays should be matched to known standard. No real variation. Using Look LUTs on top of this is where there there may be variation.

The HDlink Pro is HDMI/DVI out only, but SDI in.

Some SDI panely do allow LUTs directly within them - and we are working with Penta on doing this with their panels as they are a good price point. Should be available soon.

For a range of different displays, as you list, you will need separate LUTs for each, so a LUT box for each display is they can't use LUTs internally.

As for then burning in LUTs, Resolve, or similar is fine.

Cost wise - HDlink Pro is about $400 USD - LightSpace with full calibration options £2155 UKP - and a probe can be variable depending on what you go for.

Hope this helps.

Excellent questions. I'm very interested in calibration solutions and also want to
be aware of potential technical/equipment related challenges.

I knew you would say that, and it was a bit of a bait, wasn't it... :-))

I mean what I said, though and can argue a bit for it. But generally I think on-set monitoring has the purpose of getting the best exposure home.

When - like with the current available gammas on the R1MX - there's no way to see the full DR of the cam on set, one can set up the monitors to compensate for the DP's needs, as long as you have full control of the signalchain and this is done in on-set-to-online tests in coloboration with the DP.

If a DP tends to go super low, up the contrast.
Etc.

At 800, 2 stops (at least) are pushed "over the top" on the R1 MX, if you don't take measures to get them back. This is a quite regular issue, these days. As most DP's would prefer to shoot at 800 AND not lose the DR...

I'll leave it at that... :)

Yup.
I know I'd need a separate LUT for each display, but this is a current and relevant setup I will be setting up in the next months.

Just to give me a ballpark (you have seen what I need) could you mail me a ballpark non-committing price on probe and software to:

gunleikgroven (at) gmail (dot) com

Would apprechiate that!

i1-D2 is short for i1 Display 2 (same probe).
I never use contact probes for Plasmas as they can't deal with the display's black level noise very well.

LightSpace CMS has no lead time at all. The software is provided immediately on order.

Hubble is presently a couple of weeks from order, but the last few orders have been under a week. Having said that, we have taken a lot of orders recently and if we get more the shipment time will increase.

Highly recommend Steve's service, very prompt delivery of hubble probe in our case, and overall excellent follow-through support.

Add me to echo this statement. Steve rocks, weather at his facility, or on the go (let's say, to India)... :thumbup1:
