  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mole Rchardson did it again. WTH!!? 10K equivalent Led light!

Hmm... then the plot thickens. The efficacy is only dropping when you get to the higher wattage fixtures. It's still 4:1 around the 1kw mark, drops between 4-3:1 around the 2kw mark, and goes down to 2:1 from around 4kw onwards.

Please consider if you are comparing similar wattage like 4K HMI and 5K tungsten, these Arri fresnels are in an entirely different housing as well, different diameter of the lens also. (Osram specifies 380000lm for their 4K HMI and 135000lm for 5K tungsten)

With an open face or par, you generally get most of the light coming off the bulb to come out of the front of the fixture, but with a standard old school Fresnel, the slightly diffused glass of the Fresnel lens actually reflects some light back into the fixture and so the light output goes down.

To test this you can simple measure a Fresnel lights output (when in full flood mode) with the Fresnel lens in place and then take the Fresnel lens out (if the fixture is designed to allow this) and see the light output go up. This does not always work because the full flood on a fixture might still be far more focused and narrow when compared to the flood effect of having no lens in at all.

Sure, but it's the same deal with Mole and Desisti fresnels as well. At the higher wattages, the efficacy drops by about half no matter the brand.

I was wondering whether I could use this light on 15amp house hold out let...

of this is possible it will be the new must item for indie

I spoke to a Mole Rep last week. The new LED Tener is daylight balanced and draws 1400W. If Moles’ claim that it has the output of a tungsten 10k (but daylight balanced) is true that would make it 137FC brighter than an Arri 6kw Compact Fresenel (489FC verses 352FC) at 30’ with roughly the equivalent beam spread (30.5ft verses 32.9ft), but not quite as bright as an Arri 12k Fresnel (596FC.) I am sure it is not going to be cheap, but it will be cheap to power since you can power it off the wall or a Honda EU7000.

I'm looking forward to what NAB 2016 brings in terms of new tech etc. for LED lights.

This is pretty impressive :thumbup1:

I used the smaller versions of these fresnel LED Mole daylight lights a couple of months ago, to replace tungsten units - 1K Baby's and 2K Juniors used on a previous product set-up. So working with a studio that hasn't been wired with as many circuits as we wanted, the lights are awesome. The daylight versions of the almost identical to traditional Mole fresnel units as far as focus and quality - but put out more light than their hot tungsten predecessors. Just based on replacing 1K and 2K tungsten for the similar sized heads, we used less than 25% of the power and were up by a almost stop on the lens. You can switch out wire diffusion with your bare hands and you can touch the housing while they are on. It isn't the same as comparing to HMI PAR's but they cost less (rental and purchase) and the bulbs hardly ever need to be replaced - practically never. Compare them to HMI fresnel lights and traditional Mole lights and you will be on the right track. Cheaper than HMI to buy and power, bulbs last magnitude longer and are more color accurate. They are a fresnel replacement dream come true. I really love these lights!

It is said that you can power the Daylight LED = Tungsten 10K equivalent with 15 Amps, which is easily wall power. I always prefer Daylight so I could care less about tungsten. The RED is biased towards 5600K anyway and I hate worrying about CTO and CTB and all of that, just give me Daylight. In my experience no green at all very pure daylight. Mole has been very helpful in these rentals and I can't say enough good things about the support we got from them! Based on the specs on their web page the Daylight versions put out more lumens than the Tungsten versions anyway.

i see the future as much smaller generators, if much needed at all, more available power on location as the result of these lights.
