  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Modular Dragon OLPF sneak peak

When we started all this low cost cinema camera stuff in 2004, I thought Bayer was lame, but they managed to extract good results out of it, and faster apertures were easier to do. But OLPF fixes may never be better then 3 color with as little OLPF as possible.

We need holographic sensors that can record the wave patterns of light. Storing that as wave data is a next frontier.

The options really start to open up as we open this option up to both individuals like John Marchant that have their own unique take as well as to the big filter companies to make modules as they may.

I'm excited for third party development as this takes some of the weight of off RED's hands once everything is buttoned up and spec'd out.

There are still MXs out there in warranty? '-)

Anyone with an EPIC M who took Red Amour are probably still covered, my M is covered to Sept 2015, I could have added a further year when I upgraded to Dragon.

Jarred, I'm salivating and thinking what I can do with lava :-)

Thanks for this, good move!

Mike

Sounds good for owner operators, sounds like a nightmare if I was going to order a camera at a rental house in Timbuktu...

Exactly the issue that will trigger more FUD for Red in the production community. Rental houses will hate having to deal with multiple OLPFs. Just saying'.

Please develop at least ONE new OLPF that strikes a happy balance between highlight roll of and lowlight performance so the vast majority of people will be happy campers with the "standard" OLPF. Other OLPFs should be considered "specialty" options for those that want to tinker….

I agree with Mark.

I really like how RED has enhanced the rollout of the DRAGON sensor and also addressed both parts of the equation, which is to satisfy those who would like extra highlight protection, rolloff, better skin tones, and flare reduction, and also those who would like just an extra bit of noise floor with the modular OLPF option. Smart.

Some people like a simple answer, and there are plenty of cameras that are closer to the "prosumer" school of thought that allow for more automation and less decision making, but RED is a Cinema Camera company. I think they are making great decisions on how they are developing their product line.

Although swapping OLPFs seemed like an "interesting" idea, the idea was born in fire due to problems with both currently available OLPFs. I like the idea of lemons to lemonade, but the more I think about it the more I just want ONE olpf that gives me something I can use all the time. I understand some people want swappable - sure. But its important that swapping is not considered normal practice to get the shot.

Exactly - this is the OLPF I believe, that if it had been released on day one, we would NOT even be discussing swappable OLPFs. And as I say, the more I think about it, the more I see swappable OLPFs as a recipe to really make producers worry about using RED.

Red NEED to totally nail a middle ground OLPF before going off on tangents and providing specialty. I consider both current OLPFs as Specialty.

I think promoting a new STANDARD OLPF will help in the rental area as a number of users have said. Operators/renters MUST know the camera comes as standard with a OLPF that will deal with most circumstances. Hell no... Most don't even want to know what an OLPF is in the first place. Keep it specialty.

Stop Reds reputation for "complexity comes as standard" from going through the roof.

Other OLPFs should be considered "specialty" options for those that want to tinker….

Red need to PROMOTE the hell out of what it thinks is the STANDARD OLPF - call the CURRENT olpfs AND all additional OLPFS specialty.

Develop a STANDARD quickly and distribute it as standard.

Distribute this third OLPF to all Dragon owners and alert them that if they have no intention of swapping OLPFS then it is advised this new OLPF should be installed as standard. Third time the charm as they say. ALL other OLPFs are speciality and should be discussed and advertised as speciality to avoid FUD.

There needs to be a STANDARD Dragon period.

That can occur from dp to dp. :). Itsnot just the camera.

Of course, but it's still one more variable, one more thing to go wrong, one more thing that passes unchecked due to time/budget constraints.

And Red will get the blame for actually offering choices.

I think there needs to be a very simple and very clear method of identifying them, and they probably should be rented separately and not form the main shooting kit.

EDIT: The post above makes my point a lot more succinctly :)

I agree to an extent, but I also fundamentally believe that it's not up to us to protect RED, they know a lot more about where they are going as a company than we do.

Exactly - swappable OLPFs are a niche product for people wanting that level of control.

A standard OLPF should be rolled out to replace what is available now. Importantly call this new OLPF the standard, make sure people understand this new OLPF is what Red recommends.

Then offer this OLPF kit as a very specific thing for a very specific set of users.

What are you basing this on? As far as I can tell, the OLPF that is shipping is the standard OLPF (as determined by RED) and the "previous" OLPF can ship as an option if you want that one in the place of the "standard" one. The way you write it it sounds like you are saying that red has fucked up twice and need to come up with a standard.

I'm not sure those of us with Dragons actually see it that way. I'm pretty sure I have the standard OLPF and everything in the future will deviate from that. :)

Plenty dont see the second OLPF as being as perfect as you do.

Red has made it pretty clear (to me anyway) that the new OLPF is the new standard. They decided that highlight rolloff and colour accuracy was the most important aspects moving forward in Dragon. Sounds to me that all future developments will focus on this new OLPF.

That was more my point Bob, thanks.

That would be a big shame to many on RU. I guess distributing a new more balanced OLPF is not an easy choice to make.

Good luck to Red in the rental market with the OLPF strategy. They are going to need it.
