Hi All,

I'm making the shopping list for a complete system right now. The camera will be a dslr, D800, probably. And I need a system on which I can edit the footage.

In my country the opportunities are really limited, so basically I should choose from a HP or Dell product.

First I thought that I should buy a desktop workstation like HP z620 but in the last few days I started to think about a mobile solution. To be clear: if I buy a desktop than I also need a mobile workstation.... so I thought, what if I don't buy two separate systems, but buy a really powerful mobile workstation. I would use mainly Premiere Pro CS6, and Lightroom for photo edits. As the camera will be a D800, so I'll edit mainly that 1080p footage. Maybe there will be times when I need to edit stuff from other camera like FS100, or FS700, maybe C300, but the majority (90%) of the footage will be from the D800.

Please advise me some workstation configurations!

I would use an external hdd for editing, like a G-Speed Q 8TB in Raid 5.

Would you advise a 15 or 17 inch computer?

Is it a good idea to go the mobile route, or I'm going to screw my life with it? :)
thanks

HP is announcing new mobile workstations in about a month, and I suspect that Dell is close to doing so as well. Otherwise you can currently build a Dell Precision M6600 17" workstation for about $2800 with 16GB of RAM, a 750GB 7200rpm hard drive, and a 2.4GHz i7 processor. A similarly spec'd HP was a lot more the last time I checked. With the 17" models you obviously have more screen real estate and can typically fit 2 or 3 hard drives in them, but they're a pain to carry around compared to a 15" model.

Actually I need to order it in a few days, so waiting for announcing.... and then availability in my country is really long time.... we don't even have the new z820, 620 etc workstations yet!!!! just the old z600, and z800 series.... things going really slow here...

Dell just released the M4600 mobile workstations. You mean this or a completely new ones?

Are these machines strong enough to handle an external monitor? or maybe two? but one at least....

Does the i7 extreme processor worth it?

In my country there's no Alienware, just HP and Dell....

are you on the moon?
there are companies like ups, they deliver everywhere. Or am I wrong.
I don't mean to offend you, just want to know.

BTW: Sager NP9170 - at high configuration 3200$
i7 2,7GHz
24GB Ram
500GB SSD + 720GB 7200rpm HDD
GTX675M
17" 1920x1080

Should work ;)

You don't have to be on the moon to suffer customs and taxes!

exactly

Anyway.. Could you tell me which nVidia Quadro card is a must for a mobile workstation for Premiere CS6? Quadro M2000? M3000? M4000? I suspect that the more expensive is the best, but do I really need that?

What does nVidia NVS Quadro M2000 mean? What is NVS? Should I look for it for video editing?

Wait for nvidia gtx 680M equiped laptops. It is not a quadro, but it's really powerful!

Yes, absolutely. 1344 cores @ 725 MHz is serious business. Theoretically it is more than twice as fast as GTX 675M. In fact, it is even faster at single precision compute than a GTX 580.... on a laptop! Think for a moment just how incredible that really is. Of course, AMD got to such performance first with the 7970M, using much less power and costing much less as well, so it could be the perfect solution for SpeedGrade. Now if only that OpenCL Mercury makes it over to Windows...

Quadro K line seems impressive as well, if you are into applications that benefit from Quadro drivers. Quadro K2000 is a good starting point.

Could you tell me that the footage the Nikon D800 records internally, is readily editable (natively) on Premiere CS6, or I have to encode it?

The best way to see is to try it for yourself---but, yes, Premiere Pro CS6 handles footage from these Nikon camera natively.
