  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mobile Rocket Malfunction > Have you seen this?

Eric, I was under the same impression.

Then I noticed this.

... and this second one was still new in the box.

Perhaps you should ask Andrae about his experience with it.

Or better yet ... give Maxx Digital a call and ask them directly.

Once again ... I am not by any means saying that this is not a great product. We all know that it is. I am just suggesting that if you need to use this professionally ... and your primary need is its on-set transcoding ability ... you might want to ask Maxx Digital about the newer Mobile Rocket Raid.

I did - he had two, and only needed one, so sold the enclosure to me and the card to someone else! Andrae seemed very happy with it.

The Mobile Rocket Raid is too expensive for me.

Andrae had two Mobile Rockets. (A silver one and a black one).

http://reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=679351&postcount=3

He sold them both. Perhaps for other reasons.

It just made my Spidey senses tingle when I saw him selling the second one NIB.

This is a very rare issue Eric. I have a friend who owns one and he told me he has done "tonnes of dailies" with it. He never had one problem.

I'm sure you will be fine.

I know what you are saying. $6,000.00 is a big bite.

Mac Pro HBA Kit

Mac Pro HBA Kit

Is anyone using this with the HBA Kit?
Were thinking of moving this unit around between a few Mac Pro's and MBP.
Do you lose any speed using the Mobile Rocket with HBA Kit into host Mac Pro?

We picked up a mobile rocket unit and the HBA kit from MAXX digital recently and used it heavily over three months of shooting without major issue. The HBA kit is great in the respect that you can move the unit between the laptop and desktop which is nice from a portability point of view.

I read earlier in the thread about the MAXX digital mobile rocket unit not being designed for transcoding, and this was exactly what MAXX digital told me when I bought the unit. The issue isn't it's ability to transcode footage, which it does do just fine, all be it slower than having the Red Rocket card installed on a Mac Pro system. This was the main point that was expressed to me, that while the mobile rocket can transcode footage, it will be slower than installing the card directly into the system.

I have been working with the guys from MAXX digital for some time, and never once did I feel mislead by their people or by their product.

cheers
Colin

It is a mobile rocket. I spoke to Devon over at Maxx Digital (very nice dude), and he told me that the mobile rocket was designed for playback only and not to transcode. I guess I missed that somewhere in the fine print. It's unfortunate because using the mobile rocket on set for transcoding would be a huge plus. Looks like I will put the rocket back in my Mac tower...

That's rubbish. Mobile Rocket transcode awesome! Don't start gossiping that stupid and untrue rumor!!! I'm sure he meant "it's not made to transcode" as in "it's better on a tower mac", which is true, more power and speed etc, but I've been transcoding dailies onset and at home for months with the Mobile Rocket no sweat...

Personally, I wouldn't swap the card from the Rocket to the tower, I'd get the slot and cable HBA kit from Maxx Digital that allows you to plug the Mobile Rocket in the tower Mac without dismantling the whole thing.

If there's banding on the footage it's because the card is faulty. There shouldn't be banding, and it's certainly not because of so called "improper transcoding" use.

Every RR card owner transcodes with it, probably much more transcoding than monitoring actually.

No hard feelings, I just don't want people here reading this and think they can't transcode footage withe the RR card. It's totally made for it and is extremely efficient. I've had the card since september '10 and never had a single issue with it.

Just because something can do something, doesn't mean it is it's primary purpose or a 100% reliable soultion.

Are we being facetious? :smile5:

From the Red store:

"Decode and debayer 4K R3D files realtime. Hyper-accelerated transcode to any system codec."

http://www.red.com/store/red-rocket/product/red-rocket

From the Maxx Digital store:

• Accelerated full debayer/decompressing/downscaling of R3D.
• Speed of transcoding to QT/MXF is dependent on the laptop processor speed. (ProRes runs at about 14fps from 4k)
• Speed of generating DPX files is limited by the available disk speed and the max bandwidth through PCIe x1

No ... I'm not.

Ryan Dean started this thread because he was occasionally getting rainbow banding when transcoding.

He spoke to Devon at Maxx Digital and was told that the Mobile Rocket was primarily meant for creating looks and on-set realtime playback.

That is not a rumor. That is not gossip. That is not rubbish, Lewis. That is information from the designer or the box.

I have two lengthly phone conversations with Devon and the guys from Maxx Digital. They have told me the exact same thing.

He is candidly telling us this because he is aware of this issue. It seems to be very rare occurrence ... but it is real issue with the Mobile Rocket when using it to transcode.

Parroting what is printed on the Red or Maxx Digital website does not help here. Everybody can read that for themselves.

Every RR card owner transcodes with it, probably much more transcoding than monitoring actually.

You seem to be very confused here.

We are not discussing the Red Rocket card. We are discussing the various enclosures that it can go into. (Mobile Rocket, Mobile Rocket Raid, Mac Pro tower)

If you are using the Mobile Rocket to transcode, and it is working flawlessly for you. Fantastic!

What it boils down to is this:

If you are going to choose an enclosure for your Red Rocket card, you should do your homework. Call Maxx Digital. Don't listen to anything on this board. (Positive or Negative) Ask Maxx Digital directly what enclosure is right for you based on how you will use it.

You guys are crazy. I'm using the Mobile Rocket right now to transcode roughly 150GB's worth of data/day. I'm also using it hooked up to my FSI 17" monitor to set one light looks for the transcodes.

It's meant for transcoding more than playback.

jamie

I'm just telling you what Maxx Digital told me. I wish mine worked the way you say. Are you using the latest Firmware/Driver?

Jamie ... I am sincerely glad that it is working flawlessly for you.

However, if you call and talk to the guys at Maxx Digital ... like I did about an hour ago ... you will find that the exact opposite is true.

The Mobile Rocket is intended primary for setting looks and realtime playback. That doesn't mean that the Mobile Rocket will not work in that capacity most of the the time. It just means that there will be other times when it will produce banded clips like the ones provided by Ryan.

Apparently, the Mobile Rocket Raid has a completely different architecture, and this rainbow banding problem has been resolved. Red has been hammering a beta unit of the MRR for weeks, and apparently they have not had a single issue yet.

If you don't believe me, call Maxx Digital directly.

I hope this helps you Ryan and Eric.

Thanks man! Great info.

That's great that it's working for you, but I can only get the RR to work in my tower, and not my brand new Macbook Pro, unacceptable in my opinion. As far as you not wanting people to get the wrong idea about what the Mobile Rocket can and cannot do... I only repeated what Maxx Digital told me, that it was designed for playback and not transcoding... Take it for what it's worth.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Hi just gonna add my 2 cents in the pot...

I've been using the Mobile Rocket to transcode to QT Prores from both Storm and RCX. The performance is fine for my usage and no visible artefacts.

Best wishes,
Mark
