this will most likely go to Mitch.. but maybe someone else knows.

can the MMB-1 be modified to clamp onto 80mm front yet?
or is it too heavy for clip on?

also.. what are my swing away options?

and one more thing.. can I also modify it to fit a circle pola?

Clamp on: YES! We have the proper rings in stock. The rear aperture is 138mm and we now have the reduction ring to 130mm. From there ARRI makes a variety of rings to go to 110mm, 95mm, 80mm, etc. The MMB-1 works great as a clamp-on mattebox.

For swing-away you would have to buy a 3rd party swing-away adapter, such as the Zwingaway from Zacuto, which we also sell.

If you want to hold a circular pola, you can do this two ways:

- Use the mattebox on rods and then use the bellows back which can hld a 4.5" round filter within.

- Get a 4x5.65 tray that holds a circular pola within with a geared wheel on the top for rotating the filter. These are a bit pricey but we can supply the as well.

Hey Mitch, Is this an Arri product with an order number? I've tried to track one down for our LMB-5 but was told this was something Arri only produced for rental not sale?

The question I have is, what is the weight of the MMB-1 with 110mm step down rings and minus the rod receiver. All in it's the same price as an LMB-5 so the only advantage of the MMB-1 is the single rotating stage. The question is how much weight saving does the LMB-5 give you? Another option I like is the Defoe...

This matebox is less well knows but I've seen them around and they are very well made.

I´ve tested the Arri MMB-1 at Abelcine in Burbank yesterday after I found out that Arri is going to sell a top load filter tray for it which finally turns the mmb-1 into an interesting option for people who use grad filters a lot to control contrast.

They didn´t have the top load tray there but judging from the design of the mmb-1 you won´t be able to move the filter vertically once you´ve turned the top load tray to 45 degrees because the trays are sandwiched between the front of the mattebox and the back plate and held together by four screws in every corner and those screws block the vertical movement...

Has anyone seen the mmb-1 with the topload filter tray at work and can confirm that?

Here's some snaps of the mmb-1 in clip-on with RPP -

Nice photos. That's a standard side-load model with the new side & top flag (very lightweight). If you wanted to save a bit of weight the lightweight 15mm rod clamp block is easily removable.

Abel will soon have this product (a square or rectangular filter tray that holds a circular polarizer and spins it via a geared wheel along the edge) available for sale. Details to follow in the next few days to a week.

Mitch,

I know Arri listed the MB 20 II top flag initially for the MMB-1 until they came out with a dedicated version for it, will it work OK? I assume it mates to the thumbscrews, but wondering if it overhangs the width of the box. Is it just over-scaled to the size of the MB overall? The top flag on the MMB-1 looks pretty big....

Also curious if the side flags from an MB-20II will work as well. The look very similar.

So what's the word on weight differences between an LMB-5 and an MMB-1 w/110mm rings? Buller, Buller?

I didn't have the rings handy, but I weighed each with two filter trays in (no filters) and without top flags. I removed the LWS 15mm rod clamp from the bottom of the MMB-1.

LMB-5 .6 pounds

MMF-1 1.5 pounds

Add a few ounces for the rings and such. The LMB-5 would need a metal plate clamp back which is probably a touch heavier than the rings for the MMF-1. The weight difference is definitely less than one pound, probably about 12 ounces.

Those 12 oz. give you a rotating filter stage and the option for side wings. Not bad, but each has its use.

The MB20-II top flag mounts fine to the MMB-1. Since the MB20-II is a 5.65x5.65 mattebox, the top flag is very large and when lowered will overhang the front shade of the MMB-1 both horizontally and vertically. It also has a hinge in the middle to fold for storage, which makes it heavier and more expensive than the flag for the MMB-1.

The angle and width of the top flag on any well-designed mattebox is to match the maximum horizontal field of view that mattebox will allow. The MMB-1 can actually allow a very wide angle of view - I've tested it on the RED with a 14mm Ultra Prime - so the width of the flag is quite large. But the flag is still a good bit smaller than the one made for the MB20-II.

The MB20-II side flags do not fit the MMB-1 as the shades are different physical heights. There are dedicated side flags for the MMB-1.

Interesting, is the eyebrow rigid enough to be supported without the side flags?

Hey Evin,

Yes, they're really well made. They're not very heavy, and not very large, so there's nothing to make them droop over time. The coroplast side flags are attached to the eyebrow with velcro, so you can easily remove them, or reposition them.

We've got them on display on the MMB-1 and MB-20 II, so you can check them out for yourself next time you're in. I like them a lot, I think it's a really good alternative.
