  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello

I connected my MKE300 to my H4N on the ext mic socket and I get buzzing sound!!

What settings must I use for a MKE300 on the H4N? :(

Id like to use it as a boom mic with pole..
 
I just have to ask the stupid questions first.... got the battery in and power turned on? You see the power LED illuminate? What cables are you using, you using the standard 3.5mm mono mini plug into the H4N's mini jack input (which happens to be stereo, but ok to just use mono input). On the H4N, do you have the input set for mic level input and mic power off?
 
No comment on the battery and switched on part :) but yes I have power off and mic level.. is there any other setting in particular?
 
What H4n input are you using? Is the mic picking up normally other than the buzzing or is it just the buzzing sound? Again is the battery in the mic itself good? Is the mic itself turned on? Also if you are using the 1/8 input on the back of the H4n you could try and use a 1/4 adapter on the mic and plug it into the XLR 1/4'' combo jack. Wiggle the cord at the stress points i.e. where it connects to the mic and right after the plug and see if the noise gets worse or better. With those questions answered we can get closer to the culprit.
 
Yes the mic works on the back side input, but its 30% buzz 70% sound.

Doenst work at all on the XLR inputs.. dead silent. unless someone can explain to me the settings..
tried with a mono 3.5 to 1/4 adapter..
 
To try the XLR combos you need to change the input to the line by hitting the 1 or 2 button rite on the front of the device. Once you hit them those two buttons will be lit up. One note is that some stereo 1/8 to 1/4 adapters don't play well with mono 1/8 plugs.

Also check your record level by pusing on the rocker on the right side and lower it to make sure you are not clipping. When you talk into the mic if it is clipping the input button lights will flicker giving you a visual indication that you are clipping.
 
Are you sure that your Zoom H4N is in good condition? Maybe a port or two are out. One of my A unit's XLR ports went out on me and that not only had buzzing but also a glitchy ticking that would ruin whatever I recorded. Another thing you could look at is your Phantom Power settings and toggle those around. One last thing that comes to mind is to check if the headphones you are using could be to blame, happened quite often in my film school days, just old and well used headphones going out of the blue. Record a file and play it back on your computer to check for sure. In my overall experience though, buzzing usually indicates a battery or power issue, so check those out first and then go from there.
 
I went to a friends and he happens to have the same mic. I tried to plug it into the gold 1/8 input and it wouldn't work at all. Tried a lav mic and it worked fine. It may be the issue that was mentioned in the other thread in that it is a weird wiring issue with the mic.
