Hello redusers!
I have just recieved a red epic and are trying to figure out a good workflow for mixing it all in a 1080p timeline, where I can scale, transform and crop the red footage to my likings and use the advantage of the big resolution combined with some few clips from the other cameras.
I have the adobe suite, final cut pro x and resolve lite and my workstation is a mac pro 2012, 2 x 2,4 - 12 cores.
I am most familiar with final cut pro 7/x, but have lately been trying out premiere because of the native dslr support.
I have been out one day, just shooting with the epic to get to know the camera, also some footage from the canon and gopro for trying out different workflows.
When I mix it all in a pro x 1080p timeline, native r3d and canon and gopro footage are transcoded to prores 422 before mixing it, it works great before exporting the xml. When I import the project for color grading in resolve, still native r3d , most of the scaling and my crops are gone. I can transform, scale and crop the clips in the resolve too, and try to match the original edit in fcp x. Then, when I am done grading, I render out prores 422 and a xml for roundtripping back to fcpx. Open the xml and find that the transforming, scaling and cropping is destroyed again, and now I am working with 1080p prores rendered out clips from resolve, which means if I want to scale again, I do not have the advantage of the orignial resolution and have to upscalpe or downscale.
Are there better workflows? Am I doing something wrong? I am not locked to fcp x, and I am about to buy a better gpu that is nvidia and cuda supported to get my adobe performance better.
Sorry if I have explained my situation in a bad way. Please ask if you are wondering what I really mean or if my english is bad (I am from Norway).
Best Regards,
