  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mitchell mount or ball mount , tripod , fluid head ?

Mitchell mount is a flat top, so it's absolutely going to stay as flat and level as the tripod (or grip gear) it's mounted on, but levelling the tripod can take a bit of time, especially on uneven ground.
It's the most common mount on "film-style" shoots with a full camera crew, where assistants can help level it.

A 75mm, 100mm or 150mm ball mount allows quicker levelling of the pan & tilt head and camera, even if the tripod legs aren't fully level. The bigger the ball mount, the bigger the load it can handle without slipping.
However, for very heavy camera loads, and shots where the camera is subjected to large lateral forces, eg on a vehicle, or tilting to extreme angles, it's safer to go with a Mitchell mount that can't slip.
This is a more common mount on portable EFP, ENG, PSC, remote location, small crew type shoots.

They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I personally prefer the ball mounts, but I come from a broadcast video background.
