Don't shot me down people, first thing, Red is amazing before what I say is treated as criticism.

I really wanted a DSLR low profile setup for documentary work. I live in Asia and as soon as a white guys picks up a video camera all he can shot is people waving at the camera. ;) I was really excited about the S35 with a EVF and small mic setup to look pretty much like a high end DSLR. So was pretty disapointed it would now be in a larger Epic body.

Whats my best options at this point or should I forget RED as overkill for docu work? Could I make the smaller form interchangable work for me?

IMO, the best red camera for doc work is the 2/3 fixed or maybe the cinema, depending on the type of work. But if you look at the photos of Mark's EPIC you will see how small that is. I'm thrilled that the s35 became EPIC-S btw.

James, have you checked the dimensions of the Epic body?

The Epic-S (formally the S35 scarlet) can be rigged with a small DSLR form factor, much like the photo in your post.

For docu work, I would actually preferred the Scarlet fixed or cinema with its greater DOF.

I feel the Epic is way too chunky for what I was wanting.(and a bit out of my price range if I buy an EVF as well. The fixed for me is an option with an EVF but the back end is very long. So I was wondering about the interchangable and if there are any affordable zoom options for the 2/3?

Can I get away with only an EVF anyway won't I need an LCD for various camera settings?

I agree about the depth of field and think the whole Shallow depth of field as being "filmic" is overrated. I think the Red sensor is the reason we will get filmic look with any RED.

EDITED my dumb joke out.

...interesting question.

I would try to go somewhere where I could check out the cameras in person before giving up.

You might decide that the EPIC body is not too big after holding the real thing in your hands.

EPIC-S + Side handle + BOMB EVF + Canon 24-70 + small mike set-up weighs what???? 7lbs?

It would be nice to know the weight of this set-up VS the same SCARLET combination.

Well, consider that the Epic is really not much larger than Scarlet. Both are quite small and definitely manage to look like a Medium Format camera of some kind.

I should think not. In fact, the small form factor, modular setup, and REDCODE RAW along with the frame-rate options and HDRx make RED pretty much a perfect camera for many types of documentary shooting. It should be easy to carry around and will have an incredible ability shoot in extremely varying conditions.

Could I make the smaller form interchangable work for me?

Certainly, though I think the 2/3" Fixed may be better suited to an all around documentary camera with its ability to use auto-iris, auto-focus, zoom, etc.

The Epic is the same size as the Scarlet. I don't get your question.

Hi Carey.

...not true. Take a look:

Link is broken. But, I don't think they are terribly different in size. I asked for Scarlet dimensions in another post recently but got no answer. Waiting... :sifone:

Some links, you can't see unless you're logged in.

Take a look at Tonaci's video. He's holding a SCARLET FIXED and they talk about how it's lighter and narrower than the EPIC.

Here ya go....

Yeah, I guess the Epic is a bit bigger, but not by much. It's still a very small camera, tiny by professional standards. Nothing like the RED ONE. For ENG or doc stuff, the Scarlet would be the way to go anyways.

At 98mm wide (that's 3.85 inches) the Epic brain is amazingly small. For a documentary which required the resolution and/or horsepower of the larger camera, I'm sure it wouldn't be much of a burden at all.

I AM logged in if you mean here (REDuser)... link still broken for me. (Says "Invalid Attachment" if I follow it??)

I have seen Tonaci's video more times than I should admit.

I said they weren't "terribly" different in size, not that they aren't at all different. As I said, I was fishing for exact dimensions but they are not yet forthcoming.

It is lighter - the Fixed is supposedly about 4.5 lbs WITH lens while Epic is around 5 (or was it 5.5?) without (I think that was WITH the side CF module at the time).

Hmmmmm Strange. It shows up for me. ...not sure why you guys can't see it.

It's a photo from RED showing the EPIC and SCARLET side by side.

Here's an external LINK.

EDIT I am aware that the dimensions have changed somewhat since this photo was taken.

Thanks, I can open that (although it is rather small). FWIW, I think that is a VERY old photo (or is it a render?).

I believe it is a render. ...just trying to illustrate the diff in size to those who weren't aware. :-)
