Stolen gear perhaps? The seller doesnt want to divulge the serial number since red maintains a stolen list.

Well that's the obvious presumption. If it is in fact stolen it's pretty poor form that someone could feel OK about selling it. The sellers ebay rating is high.

I would have thought 'missing serial number' would create probable cause for an investigation.

The only way I can think that happened is if it was bought from a police or FBI auction. I'd be very surprised if RED could not trace the owner by the parts ID. It's very disconcerting that someone with good rating could be confident in selling a stolen camera.

Strange wording about having to re-certify the camera with red...

Did you ask him directly?

There have been better offers here on ru.
I haven't asked directly since I don't have an ebay account. Perhaps someone here or at RED might like to look in to it.
If it's stolen there's someone who needs it back. Or some next of kin who could benefit...

Ask them to just bring up the SN# in camera. There's a way to do that in the REDone I believe.

Camera SN and PIN are hard-coded into the camera and can't be "missing". Given the "actual photos" on the eBay listing, and how they who the camera in excellent physical condition, I would say the only reason for a missing SN label from the bottom of the camera to be sabotage. Yes, most likely stolen equipment.

Please let everyone that you do business with know that RED ONE cameras have a unique 9 digit electronic serial number - a P.I.N - that complements the physical serial number tag. The latter may be erased, defaced or otherwise tampered with, but the P.I.N can't.

The P.I.N is also written to every video frame recorded (its in the .R3D file) but an instant view of the camera P.I.N is available by pressing the key to the right of the joystick, plus the joystick itself. The P.I.N will then be displayed in the rear LCD panel. In the case of my test camera, the P.I.N is ABC_123_XYZ

The P.I.N is also displayed on the rear LCD panel and on all monitor ports at camera boot up from Build 8 firmware onwards.

With over 4000 people that viewed the item on eBay, perhaps he would not mind turning it on and posting the PIN number...

That's good to know and surely a good request to the seller.

Before jumping the gun, my old R1 had it's serial number removed while peeling some velcro off the bottom. Never realized it until I sold it. Buyer knew about it and RED never raised a flag for that missing piece of plastic while transferring ownership. That serial number was in fact very easy to peel off. It could be as simple as that.
My two cents.

I don't think anyone here is jumping the gun, just the language in the ebay add is odd, not to mention the pictured rig setup... Interesting. I'm trying to get a package together and this came to my attention is all.

Hopefully RED is at least looking into it if they haven't already.

Frederic has made a good point. That said, RED is open for business tomorrow - in all likelihood, someone is going to check those numbers - two of our mods have already contributed to the discussion.

I think that the take away for everyone is to keep a record of your PIN numbers as well as your serial number.

Also, if you are ever on location and suspect someones camera has been acquired outside legitimate channels:
If you cannot get an opportunity to pull up the PIN, try to follow the footage. Perhaps a few frames from the DIT on site can translate to a recovery... or exonerate suspicions...

Your RED PIN is here:
And next on the left side of PIN is probably the date of production: 2008-01-28

No harm in checking. If I had lost the tools for my entire career I'd certainly appreciate everything being checked. I don't really understand how someone would be selling a RED cam having no knowledge of it. It's not like they are estate sale material.

Leo,

That goes without saying. This community watches out for their members - and has everyones back - more than any other group I know.
Word spreads fast when bad shit happens. We watch - we listen - we spread the word. Recently, some cameras have actually made it back to RED just because the streets were too hot.
(Wish that happened more often).

You will find that RED owners are passionate about their cameras - it has been absolutely amazing how many recite their camera serial numbers off the top of their heads. Feels like a secret handshake sometimes.

To answer your question "how someone would be selling a RED cam with no knowledge of it": There cameras have been out there for 5 years now in some quantities. RED One serial numbers were well over six thousand last I checked (some early units were reserved but never purchased). Still, that's a lot of cameras.

Owners have had to sell for a variety of reasons - Peoples priorities change. Some cameras were sold off early - well before EPIC and Scarlet were released - those may have changed hands several times.
Heard of some that have been forced to liquidate in divorce proceedings - the spouse probably cared less where it ended up - or how it was sold.
Unfortunate, but true, there have been some that have passed on - how their heirs have dealt with the equipment is an unknown.
Probably a few more plausible reasons - but from where I sit, i need to agree with you. The ones that would not know would be rare exceptions indeed.
