minimag reader doesn't mount reliably.

Anyone else have this problem? Ever since day 1 I have had trouble mounting my reader through USB. In particular my 512gb card (vs the 128 and 256 cards which seem to mount more reliably).
Is it because it isn't drawing enough power through the usb port?

Hi David,

I recall seeing a post about this a long time ago, but yes, at the time it wasn't recommended to use the Minimag reader through USB power with the 512GB card because of the power draw.

Also, it may be down to your USB ports not supplying enough power in the first place. Always dependent on the motherboard.

Have you tried connecting power? It should come with a power cable in the box.

EDIT: Whoopso I'm misinformed. It's only if you have the 512GB 1.8 SSD.

I have the usb version too (not the usb3.1) and sometimes its a bit of hassel to get it to mount the mag. But I dont have smaller then 512gb. I just think usb it the root to all evil... thinking back I never had a problem with firewire 400/800 while getting dropped out usb disks. Im pretty shure I will get the thunderbolt version of the mini mag reader later on. That said, once its mounted It does not drop out.

Hey Homer, I tested it out last night and it seems like even with the power adapter it doesn't mount reliably. I emailed my rep about replacing it like 2 months ago and he hasn't responded so maybe I'll give them a call.

Ahh sorry to hear that David. Hopefully you get it sorted. Maybe ask them for an upgrade to the new USB 3.1 version? :wink5:
