Has anyone got a suggestion for a mini-tripod that will support a Red? Something useful for super low angles & macro stuff, but light enough to toss in a backpack. Been thinking of getting a Cinesaddle - but it would be nice to be able to come up a foot or two, as well.

How about using a Jib with an undersling? that,s really the closest I get to the ground unless I don't have the camera mounted on anything.

Good thought - but I don't know of a jib that fits on your back, unfortunately.

I'm thinking of a heftier version of [those mini tripods] that still photographers often use... but maybe with an extra section or two in the legs, to let it come up a bit, too.

The Miller Solo sticks would be perfect for you. Like three carbon fiber boompoles connected to a bowl at the top. We have them in stock.

Meeotch - I just used over the Christmas period the 055MF4 MAGFIBER from Manfrotto (with 501 head - I know...) precisely for the reasons You mention. The legs can bring the Red One to ground level, yet You can rise it up eye-level if You want to. On top of that You can mount the center column upside-down and also side-ways! A truly versatile legs and it does handle the RED surprisingly well. I shot a time-lapse in a really strong side-wind (which You can see in the timelapse) and the camera did not flange a pixel... I have used it for macro as well, You can bring the lens to the ground...

This is about 1' off the ground:

Here are the sticks raised up (to about 75% - You can bring the RED to eye level):

Hope this helps...

The Bogen/Manfrotto legs mentioned are a similar design to the Millers. I just like the Millers better and think they're more appropriate for the RED. Abel carries both.

But then he still needs a head...

For something to throw in a bag, I'd think a CineSaddle would be more appropriate.

Now you know why I take a deep breath when someone asks me what's the best tripod for a RED. So many aspects to the question.
