  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mini Primes

I mean, I'm new to RED but would batteries, media, accessories cost over $3,000? Obviously it depends on what I get as far as those things, but what about bare essentials?

It's all subjective to your style of shooting. Someone may interpret "bare essentials" as the least that you could spend to get by with shooting a few minutes of REDCODE on a CF-card. However, for me, that would'n't be enough to shoot the stuff that I do. Thus the bare bones of another's package would be less than bare bones for me.

A 4-pack of 16GB CF cards run at $1495. The 2/3" cinema camera has not been announced to also have a "starter kit" or whatever you want to call it. So, you add $500 for the CF Side Module and $900 for a 2.8" Touchscreen monitor. Not sure how much you have to spend on power but you of course need to take account of that too.

Remember, these prices may go up or down before they are for sale. Also, you will be able to buy 3rd party accessories for your Scarlet such as a monitor from http://smallhd.com/

The engadget video confirms a rough estimate of $900 per RED mini-prime, and roughly $5,000 for a full set of five. So if the brain alone is $2,750 then its pretty feasible to build a fully working SCARLET cinema for $10,000 give or take - correct? I mean, I'm new to RED but would batteries, media, accessories cost over $3,000? Obviously it depends on what I get as far as those things, but what about bare essentials?

I'm not sure 10k would really cut it, I was kinda hoping that myself but if you do the math based on the Nov 30 announcement and factor in the minimum stuff needed to shoot:

$2750 - Body
$3800 - Lenses (only 4 to cut down costs, this is my bare minimum idea)
$500 - CF Module
$550 - Redmote
$900 - 2.8" LCD (Cheapest viewing option)
$500 - Baseplate
$1250 - Battery Module
$1750 - I/O Module ( I suppose you could lose this, but would make life very difficult on set)

$12000 - TOTAL

This does not even include CF cards, i forget how much they go for, but around $400 each I think. Anyway, its the little ad-ons that get you price wise. It all makes that fixed lens package look mighty attractive...

I would love the mini primes, but how do you justify the extra cost? Where is the major advantage?

Hi there,
I know and I'm convinced that primes are batter than zooms in terms of image pure quality, aperture and so on ...

The quality of a lens is also in relate to what it was made for and what will be the principal use of it.
When you have a security camera its lens is in accordance.
When you have a camera that its image result will not be for the big screen but rather to home theatre then mini primes maybe good enough.
All this can be checked through the MTF.

About how much footage do you get per 16gb CF card, assuming you're shooting 3K?

It all depends on what data rate you are shooting with.

Ted spoke on the ScarletUser podcast that data will be measured a little bit differently than how we currently calculate. 100 REDCODE won't necessarily mean 100 MB/sec (megabytes per second). Test results were not available at the time of our conversation.

We should be hearing more about this in the near future...
