  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

mini DV.... anyone a genius?

Could you please re-post a grab with a circle around the problem area? I don't see anything wrong with the image.

I have nothing to offer, just being funny. Hope you get it worked out.

SP or LP?

SP or LP?

Were the tapes shot at SP or LP?
LP recorded tapes may only playback correctly in the camera that shot them.

The worst case is that the heads were dirty or damaged when shot and the footage is damaged and not recoverable. Hope that's really not your case.

well. these are the infamous corrupted miniDV tapes from Burning Man of 2008. We shot 400 hours of footage Mostly on other HD cameras and about 40 hours on the 3 RED cameras... this miniDV camera was my personal camera...

they were shot in SP mode. 16x9.

If this was a tape from black rock dessert its certainly playa dust on the head and junking up the camera. I had similar problems out there a few years ago and never got it sorted out. Best of luck and maybe see you out there next time around.

You maybe screwed. The picture shows a dusty, dirt filled location so if your head was dirty you could have only laid down half the footage as you see it- 50% black bars. Changing the tape could dislodge the dirt so the next tape could be fine. I have also had a small piece of the plastic wrapper the mini-DV tape came in fall into the camera one time and that effected my recording on playback. When changing tapes I use a can of air to blow out any junk that could fall into the transport and the heads are Microns in size so even a dust speck is trouble. I've had problems using smoke on set and getting some mini-DV drop-outs that look like your footage but it only lasted a few seconds and cleared up. I hope you have good luck on finding a fix.
