  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Exquisite. Absolutely exquisite. Just look at the tonalities in the snow scene, the luminosity; clouds, shadows, highlights (specular and all): pearls and creams.

And then the tunnel: I see a light at the end of it, and in the middle, and during every gorgeous tunneling foot of it. Keeping in mind, its exposure is set to favor bright, direct sunlight.

Sanjin, it's called "grading" when done by hand :-) (or tone mapping when automated.)

HDR (in general, and HDRx™ in specific) is all about capturing as much data as possible that you can grade from whatever method you so choose to use to grade from, being it curves, power windows, tone mapping techniques, or whatever....

Graeme

Thanks Graeme.

That sounds good in a way that RED didn't stop with just one solution and there could be some more HDRx options to see in a near future...

Ok.. This shot takes my breath away.. No bullshit...

Damn.... :w00t:

ISO options are already available via the curves function where you have access to all the metadata, You can already pull the values on either side. If you wanted to you could pull a highlight version and a shadow version in redcine as it is and then combine the two images in post taking the values of each to maintain a higher dynamic range. I gather you are saying Sanjin, it would be good to have that automated in redcine? I think the reply then is its somewhat redundant because technically you can already do that with curves.

Also, i think i would have to agree with what someone else said and that is there is no discernible flickering above what is already known to exist in shooting fluros with scanning sensors. I think what you are seeing is the breaks in between the fluros. I looked at the footage carefully and could not see what you are talking about.

This leads to a problem which really needs some attention on your part. It is incredibly frustrating to go through this testing phase with people who are taking their time... to get reactions which aid in confusion and are somewhat premature in outlook. Step out of the detail and look at the big picture before commenting please. We are dealing with an industry based on illusion. The whole idea that you can flicker two pictures next to each other to give the illusion of reality is what the whole cinema industry is based on. No one looks that close because looking that close is redundant.

There is a fine line between creating an illusion which works and one that doesn't. Under these quite harsh conditions it obviously works.

Getting HDR through ISO is ok. The way Red has done it is ingenious. Both options are already there. In fact you can do both together to maximize the DR even more when you think about it.

HDRx is what's going to set Red apart from every single camera system in the known universe. It's not going to be 5k. It's not going to be 120 fps. It's not going to be form factor. It's going to be HDRx... Hands down...'And to think that this was a bonus feature added later... These images are FUCKING stunning. Like nothing I've ever seen before. It's safe to say goodbye to film with this new feature... HDRx has me more excited than the original Red One... Jim please sell me my camera! I have so much to shoot

At my first impression, it looks almost like CGI, but then this is real ! And it's a beautiful shot in one take, the contrast ratio between the bright and the dark is simply stunning and very well maintained.

I think HDRx is actually a nice look on its own. even if you dont actually need the full exposure range or have a specific need to reclaim highlights etc, theres an interesting (and subtle) new look here thats not tone mapped, its not extreme.. just different. need to explore more

Graeme,

I was always for RAW and that's a reason I'll stay with RED.

Now EPIC/Scarlet can record two separate exposure tracks thanks to the new hardware/motherboards.

As a customer and REDUser I'm happy that RED Team is looking forward to capture as much data as possible out of the sensor

and also I'm glad that they have an interest in a near future to develop a sort HDRx app maybe as a potential plug-in for Storm or even RCX.

My biggest hope for HDR/HDRx is that I'll need less fill light to get a similar looking cinematic image... I'll just expose for the detail in the "shadows" all the time (which will no longer be all that shadowy), which will naturally blow-out any highlights, but then throw on the +6 stops to retain that information. From there, in post, I'll be able to bring everything back down to normal/good-looking levels in the lows/mids/highs... That's the theory anyway (it'll require boatloads of testing to see what exactly I can get away with.)

For example, look at that forest shot, the sky is still blue (not blown) and yet none of the tree trunk is silhouetted/black at all. Normally you'd have to choose (and in most cases let the sky go). Same thing with the wing-shot that matt and sam did; exposing for the wing would normally completely blow out the sky, but throw on +6 and you can see blue sky and clouds along with an exposed wing... The best part is that contrast is still possible, rather than just an ultra flat image that requires huge tweaking/masks to get right in post.

Yesterday I went out on a shoot with the Foundry guys - namely Bill Collis - and once again I hardly took any 5D shots - I could not get past how small and workable an EPIC is on even a sailing yacht.

Soon we'll post a short we made with the EPIC - but I just wanted to give a shout out the RedCineX team -there is a lot in that little program.
We have done this film almost entirely with it.. (offline in FCP) and even graded it... not too bad.. now if it just had secondary 'power windows'... but seriously RCX can do a lot and is really got some neat features.

Anyone to the RCX team - who never seem to get much (or as much) praise as the camera guys - nice job guys.
Mike

Beautiful shot, Mike. Can you please advise around what time did you shoot it.
Cheers

Yeah, it looks great ... unless you're driving over it.

Have you noticed any gotchas with this camera Mike? Because everything I'm seeing and hearing is just good, good, good!

Amazing still Mike. Thx. What were the aperture and iso settings on this? (if you can share) ...

it was on 1/96th - 48 fps, fully open with a variable ND on the 11-16mm (my new fave lens for mobile work) ISO 800, HDRx 3 stops.

The rushes *look* flat - especially in HDRx mode - but of course are wonderful for grading - I think most people will want to apply a rough look to most magazines when looking over the rushes...

There are a lot of interesting aspects about shooting HDRx - but not gotchas.

Mike

Thanks for sharing- that is impressive!

In terms of grading- once it has gone through RCX, are you going to ProRes, DPX, ... I assume that once out of the one light in RCX the files can then be handled as normal and secondaries could be used (if needed) in a standard grading app. (Assuming that it supports 5k that is.)

Also, any news on Storm supporting HDRx that you can share?
