Microsoft unveils new controller - Amazing

What?

MGS was cool, Star Control...Okay...

But FFXIII? Come on now. RPG's have had incredible storylines since the dawn of the genre. The real peak for console gaming depth came when SNES hit. Titles like Final Fantasy Six (3 in US) set the bar for things to come and my personal favorite...

Chrono Trigger. There hasn't been a game based on time Travel YET that can come close to what Chrono Trigger's storyline offered.

How about Final Fantasy 7? Squaresoft's star franchise? The plot of that game was so thick you had to play through it twice to understand a quarter of it. And each time you rolled through it, it was a good 40 Hours of playtime at minimum, or you'd get your ass handed to you by Safer Sephiroth.

Gotta go back further, man. SNES's RPG plot-lines are incredible and were what truly began to define the "story" within a game.

FFIV is my personal fave of the series (c'mon, Kain can probably be considered the predecessor to Sephiroth, he's so badass). :D FFVII too many plot twists, IMO. FFVIII... I'm a bit of a sap, so I wholly welcomed the 'unrequited love' story. FYI, Star Control 2 (the others don't hold a candle to crap) was released only months after the launch of SNES. BTW, I too loved Chrono Trigger. Well, what I remember of it anyways (which is not that much lol).

Back on topic, this interactive controller-thingy seems like a cool innovation, but I don't really see it becoming ubiquitous unless they can make it affordable, contained in a portable system (instead of a computer-type case), upgradeable (which, being a MS product, I'm sure you'll need to do many times after purchase) and genuinely fun to use. Basically Wii. :D I know it's just a glimpse of what's possible a few years down the road, but I can't help thinking that it'll deliver on all aspects save for enjoyability and ease of use, i.e. a glorified version of that paper-clip thingy in Windows (I use Mac, so I don't know what it's called). But it's probably destined for greater things than video game applications, so maybe the fun factor won't matter too much.

Man, I feel like playing SC2 now (good thing it was ported for Mac, and released for free).

I'm with you, Jay. The uses for this type of system need to be geared toward a full blown interactive experience. I don't want to talk to a fake kid, man. But, give me a game that I can run around my living room with and an old school Nintendo Zapper as my gun...

I may just quit life. LOL

And someone ought'a give Spielberg and his best friend a Copy of Left 4 Dead or Resident Evil 5. Tell them to play that together online and see how it fairs.

One of THE best gaming experiences I've EVER had in my life as far as group gaming goes.

Pathetic how they present it.

A total copy of steve jobs presenting style when introducing Apple's Products. which by the way are impossible to compare with crappy microsoft hardware and sofware.

Crappy hardware and software?

360 Live/Zune/Media Center makes Apple's foray into the living room look like a Highschool senior project done at the last minute.

I would also hardly describe the presenation as Applesque. It's VERY MICROSOFTy.

Music -> VP of something or another -> Big name CEO/Developer -> Corporate Video with happy people doing happy things -> Wrap Up. Next Feature.

It's how they've presented their products since windows 95. Watch the launch of Windows XP I guarantee you you'll feel some dejavu.

Brook you are an evil evil man. Too many Fs huh? I still think that guy needs to learn to speak!!!!!!!

Kholi, I think you're overlooking the main point of this tech, which is that you won't need a controller/lightgun/joystick to interact with the game.

I've never played L4D, but I can imagine it now, running around your living room, hand in 'gun-form' and shouting "PEW! PEW! Eat finger zombie scumbag!!!"

It'd also be interesting to see how well it can be implemented in military/firefighter/police training simulations, where the trainees would be sent to neutralize an enemy compound/save old people from a burning church/deal with an armed and aggressive junkie. Kinda a poor replacement for the real (read: simulated) thing, IMO, but definitely worth investigating.

Hmm, just thought of lasertag for a second there.

I don't thing that this is healthy... A child of 8 years old could be able to have a "digital" friend... he will feel emotions for a machine??? its getting crazy... I thing its better to talk to our children, have time with them and let them play with real friends...

I thing its time to stop playing god... and remember the laws of robotics.

This is not funny at all... it is really scary... and I'm a tech freak... but still, I'm a father of three...

To interact in a game like that will be cool, but getting emotional its crazy...

They have to keep them emotionally stupid... at least in this way they will have a game and nothing more...

In ten years (if not earlier) we will have in our streets a RoboCop...!

And having access to a video game automatically means you can longer have access to your parents or friends...?

Ok... This technology has really freaked me out... I'm gonna find that kid and kill him before there are more of them!!!

Jay

Grand Theft Auto. Don't you just wanna push him in the lake??

The British police already have a sort of version of this that they do there armed tests with. Definitely an application, depending on its true sophistication.
