I finally found a hi-res quicktime of this piece.

As MGMT is really "blowing up" recently I thought I'd let you know this video was shot on Red on a Blue screen stage in Greenpoint.

DP: Andrij Parekh, Red Tech provider: yours truly.

I gotta say, I first heard their music on set, but "Oracular Spectacular" is pretty decent.

Post-HIPPY style music video clip shot on RED.

Here you have only happy-(quasi-post)-hippy WHITES.

For example in a famous Milos Forman's film HAIR there were represented all races, white, black, brown, yellow, red. etc,...

But that was a part of HAIR story concept and that's really HIPPY/HIPPIE message.

For my point of view this video has a spoiled HIPPIE concept!?

Since it's all being masterminded by twenty year olds, I'd imagine they haven't put a tremendous amount of thought into the social/historical ramifications of their casting choices Sanjin.

It's interesting to note that they shot blue screen under tungsten light because of all the green in the set design.

I was into that video.
Unique.

I see it.

Very catchy tune, oddly haunting and addicting.

The video is lovely as well and the look reflects the music perfectly, although the effect where they slice open the world and smear the chi or whatever all over themselves kind of took me out of it a bit...it's not really as organic to the rest of the feel of it as it could have been, somehow.

The whole Court 13 gang sounds most interesting, I'm going to order Glory at Sea, this is the first I've heard of it, and it looks wonderful.

Been watching this vid for last couple weeks on Fuse. Via broadcast I had no idea it was shot on a Red...it looks so crappy by the time it gets down the pipe it could have been DVX almost.

iBloom, did they cart in the Rock-A-Fire mechs for the shoot, or did they send a camera to it?

BTW, Reds for music vids in LA are fast becoming standard. The budgets are just getting too low (and the expectations not changing) for anything else.

if anyone wants a higher res file let me know our company did all the work on post for it and it was put out at 2k, but alas most channels still operate at a mpeg2 quality standard. a lot of the scenes wern't necessarily too organic, but in the end that's really where he wanted to go. it actually came out a bit more realistic than where we had initially saw it. in terms of the animatronics, those were actually shot down in orlando with a lil hvx, became a nightmare in getting the keys to work.

a lil recommendation after doing a lot of keying the red, go with bluescreen, i just got through with a green screen shoot and i had much better results with the blue screen than green. more spill with the green and the blue's key quality falls off better in its darker areas.

What was the workflow you finally settled on?

How close was the subject to the greenscreen in this other shoot you are talking about?

That really depends on how it was shot...I find green screen much easier to work with. If you have the subject too close to the background you are going to have spill issues regardless of color.

the green screen was a 2 wall syc so spill was pretty rampant, but that really wasn't our biggest issue. I simply found the blue screen footage to key better in its darker shadow areas.

in terms of our workflow,
we convert to apple's prores using compressor so it works as a simpler batch convert. These files are then used for the edit. then once we're ready we conform the edit timeline using mr. bloom's crimson workflow. really a godsend for post, cheers again for all your hard work.
once that's all done we do all our effects and cc in after effects. i'm sure most of you cringe when hearing that but honestly the flexibility of the program as simply unrivaled. we work with everything in 32bit and then downsize for broadcast delivery there after. Really not too complicated.

i'm going to try and get a 1k version of it up so you guys can check it out.
a lil bit of fun is that it just got nominated for a vma for best art direction, which we're pretty proud of over here at Ghost Town. but ya i'll try to get you those files soon.

Awesome Ian. I envy you. I love this band. Going to see them at the Hollywood Bowl with Beck & Spoon, Sep 20.
