  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mfa student needs help!!!

With the RED:

If the strobe lasts for more than 1/48th of a second then you are getting the same exposure time as with out the strobe.

If it lasts for less then you will get a horizontal tear across the frame. The explosion it's self, will it be a simple kinetic or will there be fire?

Maybe shoot 3k get 60fps and wank the shutter WAY down as closed as it will go, assumeing your explosions will have fire they will light them selves to this level, and you might get a usable frame or two.

Really the best answer is a photosonic or Phantom as mentioned. However you need someone experienced in either and they and the cameras are not cheap.

So my thesis, it's not about high-speed photography, or about video, but really the on-going relationship between technology and art. If you're interested, some good critical theory to read would be Walter Benjamin's "A Short History of Photography," in which he first revealed his famous concept of the "optical unconscious". Another of his most well known essays would be "Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction," in which he discusses the aura in photography, questioning whether it ever existed as photographs by nature of the process are never originals, and do not show the hand of the artist.

hope that helps, if not, you should still read them if you haven't already because of their importance in photographic critical theory.
