  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MetaFuze v2.0 now available!

Thanks for the new Metafuze - a great improvement.

One small request for the next version: In the "Burn In" setup, would it be possible to add "Clip Name" as a burn in option, so that the burn in matches the R3D file name ( as opposed to "Tape Name" which shows the header name).

Reagards,

Richard

Yup - on the list. Also, we are hoping that the next SDK gives us the actual file name persisted into the header so the they will be the same anyway.

Is the project rate matching the shoot rate?

Yes, project rate and shoot rate are both 23.976. We have a 20 minute clip, audio starts to become noticeably out of sync after about 2-3 minutes and progressively gets worse.

We'll look into it. Any one else seeing drift?

Severe compression artefacts with Metafuze or Redrushes

Severe compression artefacts with Metafuze or Redrushes

Hi Michael,

I've been trying to transcode some red 4K HD material to DNxHD but it seems not matter what quality settings, etc. I choose, I end up with some severe chromatic artefacting (mostly visible on coloured walls, etc.).

It kind of looks like posterization or very poor compression...any thoughts?

The intention is to edit and colour correct in Avid via 1080p23.976 DNxHD 175x.

Are you using tge beta version of the v20 firmware with the new color science? We are working on the next version of MetFuze to include the new color science. Another question - does it do the same thing at 2K 1/2 debayer?

Thanks for the quick reply!

We're on build 17. I tried using Metafuze 2.0 and Redcine and both seem to produce the same results.

One other variable is that we used 4K HD recode 28 for aquisition. I'm not sure if it does the same thing at 2K, but I have tried using the full debayer / full premium settings and it still seems to result in a "posterization" look, wherever there is colour and shadows.

Could it be a resample filter issue?

Thanks!

Interesting... are you able to look at it under any of the Mac based RED tools? I shoot the same format you are, and haven't seen this.

Michael

Michael, do you shoot with a Red?

I shoot with a lot of different cameras for the features I produce. The last feature I produced and sold was shot DV25. But we (Avid) have a RED camera and the settings I have been using are the same as what you have set. I will be shooting RED this weekend with the latest v20.x.x firmware for testing purposes in workflow.

I do have a couple features in development of which a RED camera will used.

Hi Michael,

Any idea when V20 colour science is supported by Metafuze? Is it a quick thing to change or will it be a good few months away?

By the way MF2.0 is working beautifully - thanks for all the hard work.

Cheers,

Tom :cheers2:

Hi Michael,

Yeah, I tried doing some encoding using Red Rushes and ended up with similar artefacting.

Would it be possible for you to let me know what specific settings I should use with MetaFuze in order to end up with online quality DNxHD 10 bit files when dealing with R3D files? Information like that may also be very valuable for Avid's Red workflow guide.

Thanks!

What version of MC are running? If older, it may be using older QT codecs for DNxHD. On ww.avid.com/red - look to the Avid utilities tab and download the QT codecs from here and see reinstall and try again.

none yet - making some test material for engineering.

Hi Michael,

We're running Media Composer 3.5.4 for PC. I've also attempted using DNxHD codecs from www.avid.com/red and also from the DNxHD homepage.

In doing some further tests, I think the moire / colour artefacting I'm seeing might be a result of the 709 gamma conversion. If I do not enable the conversion to 709, the artefacts seem to be gone (but of course, the luminance and colour is incorrectly displayed then).

Seems to appear most when there's colour in shadows. But even sometimes if I look carefully at skin tones, some compression blocks show up.

Seems very strange to me as I've used DNxHD for several other onlines and couldn't see a single trace of visual signs of compression.

Could it be related to a specific resize filter?

Thanks for your help!

Is it possible for you to send me on your shorter clips?

Just saw it...around 3:15 in a clip everything goes from being okay to about 6 frames off sync.

It seems to be isolated to one 4:11:00 clip. I have other clips that reach the 4 minute mark that look fine.
