  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Metafuze 1.2 requires MC3.5?

We also use the media tool to import our mxfs. And I can confirm that theres no issues with 25p. Atleast it worked for us. Doublehd red files in 25p via metafuze to mxf. Then import from the correct dir and with the mediatool. Smooth as silk. Other then mfuze not utilzing the CPU fully. =/
What resolution are you transcoding at? On my system, MetaFuze utilizes the full 8 cores, I believe the SDK chokes systems down to only 2 cores at Full Premium. But it may be you are seeing only 40% usage or something similar per core. This is where the current build is at. A new MetaFuze will be released that improves render times. You may also check under the User settings, there is a CPU usage pulldown that lets you choose how many cores to utilize. However, I still see MetaFuze using all 8cores at Half Good or Half Premium, even if I set it to 2 cores.

Heya

It's set to use all 8 cores. And... Depending on how you look at it it uses all eight cores. But only a total of 50-60% of the total. So it spreads it out but it ain't cranking each core up to 100% which I would have expected. :nerd:

I tested to transcode at Half good and quarter. Same results on both. Will test more next week.

Forrest: Thanks for your help, but I am still having no luck.

I have just installed Metafuze on the MC PC and exported the MXF directly into the media drive "1" folder and still seeing the same issue.

To recap: Avid MC 3.1.1 on Vista 32 Business Metafuze 1.2

Open 25P R3D file in Metafuze and output MXF file to "1" folder on media drive, using "Debayer Low" and "Resolution Half Good" using DNxHD120 codec. Export ALE.

Create 1080 25P project and using procedure outlined on page 30 of Metafuze user guide, which involves locating the MXF file in the Media Tool and dragging it into a bin.

Can find the file but it will not drag into bin.

Drop ALE file into bin and attempt to relink - does not relink.

Regards,

Richard

Just out of curiosity. What do you want the ALE for? Isn't it kinda obsolete when going with MXF. All the metadata is in the MXFs Or am I missing out on something here?

Would it be possible to get access to you MXF, R3D and ALE? Can probably do some testing on monday if you want. I can provide an FTP link where you can put it if that's the case. :matrix:

That's how it rolls currently. Hopefully the new MetaFuze won't be too long in the making.

Hmm... I thought 1.2 was the new one? :glare:

Henrik: Just attempting to use the ALE as an alternate method of linking to the MXF, as the first method is not working.

Are you on Vista?

I like the ALE files, since I have umpteen other projects on that drive. I know I could sift by date and drag and drop, but the ALE makes life simple.

Hi Richard, do you want to send me your ALE and I'll have a look at it. The only difference on my machine, is I'm running WinXP 64. And on my MacBook Pro, I'm running XP 32. Both of them worked with your file.

Aaaaah. Good point about the ALE. Thanks for clarifying that. =)

We run xp32 in all our suits. Trying to keep vista as far from us as we possibly can.

Just drop me a mail/pm/note if you want me to look at your footage.

Cheers guys

In terms of metadata and what not, is there really a need for the ALE file. If I just use mediatool to load mxf's (from metafuze) into Media Composer, do I still have all the needed metadata to re-conform and online later?

You should be fine either way. There was one user who reported problems later down the line when using mediatool for import. But the devs said that wasn't the issue. Just to be sure, why not try a couple of clips both ways and make sure the metadata tracks through correctly.

I tried both ways earlier, and I believe the only difference I saw in the bin info was 'camroll' and 'tape' were switched whether I use Mediatool or ALE. I don't know if there is metadata that I cannot see.

In any case, after using Metafuze 1.2, I don't feel that product is ready for use. I seem to have so many varying problems with it I don't even want to bother... so much so that I almost don't even want to post/search for problems on the internet cuzz there are just too many things I'm running in to (difficult user experience, no audio support, no 10-bit, I get different luminance between Metafuze and Redrushes, and more).

It seems easier to rent a Mac Pro and use RedRushes to output Quicktimes and an ALE. (we are all Windows here)

Maybe after coffee I'll be more apt to try to find solutions ;)

A new version should be here soon that will address some of the issues you face. I haven't personally seen it yet but it is supposed to fix the batch issues, audio support and be much faster. As far as the luminance, have you tried a RSX file from RedAlert? Although you would need a Mac for this purpose. Are you going to use the MXF media for Online? Otherwise why would you need 10 bit files? Redrushes is a good way to go but I'm still not convinced which is faster, direct transcode to MXF through MetaFuze or transcode to RedRushes Quicktimes with an additional step to fast import the generated quicktimes.

Hi,

Yes, we want to transcode everything to 10-bit 1080 and just do an HD workflow.

The big question I'm now not able to answer is why there is no "easy" way to playback Red files on a Windows machine, meaning, why is there not a Quicktime plugin for Red files (the reference files that is) like on the Mac? Do you know why? Is it an evil plot?
