Don't kill the MacPro! I, for one, need to buy a new system and would like to see a new release of the MacPro with Thunderbolt I/O, more processing power, and rack mountable. It can be a good 2012 for the MacPro line. Make it happen, APPLE!

Apple isn't interested in supporting the professional user anymore.

If it isn't a cool idevice to play music, play movies or surf the internet, it is highly ;likely you will never see it.

Dual thunderbolt ports + 7 PCIe slots... LOL, a girl can dream!

I can't tell you just how tired I am of hearing this.

I just visited the two major post production houses of Norway, and there sure is a lot of insecurity about Apple's future. Everyone wishes they'd continue their great line, but slowly people lose hope — and they have businesses to run.

Obviously there's a market for new Mac Pro towers with enough slots etc.
The problem I've run into in building one in the past is dealing with exacting chip set standards
that meet the exacting specifications of the ones from which developers write their code.
Chip sets can change in six months, software not rewritten for the bottleneck, then you're basically screwed.
At the end of the day, you can build the perfect box and find out there's some weird
incompatibilities that messes everything up.

Well, there's a reason for that.

Nothing's official, yet. I wonder how many on this forum would buy a next generation MacPro. It has to be a large percentage of us. Come forward Redusers. Maybe somebody at Apple will read this and if a large number of Redusers showed interest, maybe Apple will take that into consideration. I don't want to switch back to Windows!

My quadra 4800 covers 2 slots, RME Soundcard, RAID card, Firewire Card, USB 3 Card, and I'd also like to put a Black Magic or Red Rocket in there, or both.

There are a few boards out there now, but when I was building my latest system a year ago (which is a Dual Xeon with two Quad processors) there wasn't that much on the market, so I had to settle for one with five, and it's quickly becoming obvious that it's not enough.

When you get the new machine keep the old one as your DAW. There! I just saved you a couple slots. You're back down to a respectable 5. No?

Yes, the reason I'm tired of hearing it is quite obvious; people can't seem to stop repeating it.

the reason people keep repeating it, is cause apple has to potential to hurt a lot of businesses large and small in this industry... random venting is the natural course. jumping to go 100% pc to get a quality workstation isn't financially the easiest thing to do right now in a heavily engrossed OSX workflow.

I believe they already have this kind of macpro... It's called, "Hackintosh."

Just kidding!

Seriously though, unless your workflow completely relies on ProRes, there really isn't much preventing you from switching to something else/better. And with bootcamp, you could theoretically run windows on the same hardware you currently have, while you make the transition. I mean even if you've only used FCP it doesn't take too long (a day or two?) to get familiar enough with other crossplatform NLEs (PPro, Avid, etc).

I really like Apple's products and have many of them (some multiples of each, as I am sure most of us do). If they had a 20-core MP w/ more PCI, SATA3 support, Thunderbolt & USB3.0 I'd be all over it in a heartbeat. However, If they decide they don't want to support the Pro user anymore, fine -- open up your code more and let us build our own. I have been waiting and waiting for a feasible successor to come along, I saw the 12-core refresh as a .5 version, so it has been nearly 1000 days since a real refresh, but I am tired of waiting. Consequently, I can and am building an editing workstation with performance specs that beat the top-end MacPro offering. Moreover, it is dollar-for-dollar more bang for the buck than a MacPro. Only downfall is I am stuck putting Win7x64 on it because the components aren't supported even on a hacki build. I would much prefer to use OS X, but oh well. It is a purpose-built work machine, and to that end it will serve the business use case well. When/if the new MacPro is available, I will likely get one. In the meantime, my money goes elsewhere. C'est la vie.
