OK, I have never needed help before with my RED One or since I got my EPIC. No one at RED tech support this morning to ask dumb questions (went to voicemail) so,

I got my side handle last week but have been so busy, I only just put it on the camera. I must have touched a button or something but now I have no menus on my touchscreen. In addition, the navigation buttons do not seem to work on the side handle. Some of the other buttons work and the display is on but since I cannot see the LCD responding, I can't tell if the navigation portion of the side handle is working. I have searched and I have read manuals. I just cannot find what to do. I would do a factory reset but that requires being able to see the display of menus it seems.

BTW
RED EPIC X
Firmware 3.0.0

Anyone got any advice?

In your case I would reinstall the firmware by copying the "forceupgrade" folder to the SSD and powering the camera on.

Hi Lauri,

I am going to do that now. It just seemed like it was something I bumped. Thanks for the reply. I will report back in a few mins.

Did you try a quick double tap on the touch screen? If that doesn't help, Lauri's approach sounds sound to me as well.

Hi David,

Yes, double tap got nothing.

I just did the force update and it works! Menus back and now the sidehandle navigates.

Thanks Lauri and thank you everyone on this forum. I have been reading and learning here for years. This is the first time I had an actual need and within minutes, I am back online with the camera!

Double tapping will force the menus back on the LCD - but sometimes it is a bit tricky to do. I've found people have better luck when using a light touch.

Don't we have a choice in the Setup>Audio/Video>Monitor menu on what output connector we would like to see the menus to appear?

Did you play with this?

Hi Andrew. I did not play with the output of menus. I had no menus on LCD and no movement on navigation of wheel so could not go there to make changes. The reset forceupdate fixed it but I don't know why it was doing both of those things ie no nav on SH and no menus on LCD.

In any case, I am back in business.

Trent, I did play with the LCD and tried double tap. If it happens again, I will try light touch.

THANK YOU REDUSER :) this is a great tip, had the same problem today, and my red mote wasn't even thinking of connecting, didn't want to reinstall all the firmware, great tip :)

After a near disaster with this on a production yesterday and searching the web, etc... I called RED and was told to "tap the top left of the screen" and the menus would re-appear. I tried that and nothing. The rep told me to try the "bottom left" because it depends on what firmware you are on. No Go. My 1st tried the TOP RIGHT and guess what... Menus! Oddly, settings were all askew, due, im sure, to my attempts to bring it back using the side handle... Ha, ha!

Thanks to my 1st ac on this one as i was moments away from a force upgrade and who knows what that would have meant!

The real answer is to double-tap ANYWHERE on the screen to bring back the menus. You may need to try tapping faster or slower to get the double-tap to register.

I encountered this issue today. Is it possible on a future build to implement a small transparent button on the touch LCD (when no menus are visible) that can be pressed to make the menus appear again? Or perhaps make it easier to double tap the menus back on the screen so that with any amount of pressure or timing of the double tap, the menus come back?

This doesn't work at all on the current build. Force update...
