  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Meizler Module Features Video

Do you need the module to use the app or can you use most features witout it?

GREAT STUFF!

Amazing how much more distant to everything else out there!

thank you!

I've ordered a module but am having a hard time getting some basic details on the fundamental functionality of the module;
  • I need to make start/stop cables for a MRMOCO head and camera cranes. Which port on the module is used to start/stop the camera? Will the 4-pin CAN port function as the GPIO of Red One and Pro I/O or does it use the 232/422 port and is that port the same connector/pin configuration as the AUX ports on previous cameras?
  • When used with a Preston FIZ3 I'm under the assumption that the Meizler replaces the MDR2. Will the start/stop command to the camera carry through the module port on the back of the Epic brain?
  • When will the mini-mag's go on sale? Will they be able to ship when the Meizler is ready to go?
  • When will the RedSync Master go on sale? Will it be able to ship when the Meizler is ready to go?

I just need to have the support for this module. Without the proxy media and RedSync Master I've just purchased a $13K paperweight.

Love these videos. Any chance you guys could set up an iTunes podcast feed with these videos? Pretty please :-)

You need the module to be able to connect the iPad to the camera and control it (= send/recive data to/from the camera). Also RED SYNC MASTER generates the wireless TC for the Meizler Module (the camera) and the iPad app so you can use the in-app slate in sync with the master TC.

I got the impression that was derived from the iPad doing a lookup on the wifi network it's connected to, not GPS on the Epic itself.

I don't think so. The GPS coordinates appear to be sourced form the camera, and initially displayed as the raw(hehe) cooprdinates on the iPad. If you then have internet connectivity, you can push the button to plot those camera coordinates on a map (via google mapping services).

It least that's the way it appears to me, and what would seem to make sense: we have already been told the camera has internal GPS/gyros, and thats by far the more useful and accurate information for most needs... who would really care about the location of the iPad iteself?

I see proxy recording makes H264 files. All in-camera right? I see DNx in the video but I could not find anything about further specs. Is it also able to do Proress (8bit/10bit/12bit 422/444) directly in your RED?? Can H264 be recorded in 4K?[/QUOTE said:
Googled my own question and found out theres still some secret in this.

From: http://www.studiodaily.com/2012/09/three-developments-in-post-im-watching-from-afar-at-ibc/

Hints at the "proxy" formats are all over the Reduser thread from Jarred Land:

"I can't tell you all the formats (except for H.264 and DNxHD) .. but I can tell you some resolutions…720p – 4:2:2 @ 24 & 60fps, 1080p – 4:2:2 @ 24 & 60 fps , 2k – 4:2:2 @ 24 & 60fps, 2k 4:4:4 will become enabled early 2013"

It's very cool to see 2K recording in there, and DNxHD as well. Too bad Media Composer can't currently edit resolutions higher than 1080. For me (and others), the question on the DNxHD recording is: .mxf or .mov? Let's hope .mxf. The next question is OP-Atom or Op1a?

"10bit DNxHD, Correct"

That tells us that the Meizler Module will be recording way more than just DNxHD 36 files for offline editorial. 10 bit DNxHD resolutions are the X resolutions like DNxHD 175X for 23.98 fps.

"Standalone files ready to edit in whichever one of the 3 codecs you chose in resolutions of 720p, 1080p, or 2K"

That's good to hear, since those are going to be a great alternative if conforming the raw R3Ds isn't an option.

"We can't disclose that till it is finished going through the certification process… Those are the rules and we need to respect them"

I think it's safe to assume that third codec is ProRes (we all know that Apple certification can take a very long time). There really isn't any other choice but Cineform. While Cineform would definitely be a very interesting choice, the RED masses would riot if the Meizler Module doesn't include ProRes.

Sooooo...now RED is good for every shoot for sure.

Any update on what wireless audio transmitters work with the Meizler?

Thanks,
Tim

You guys just knocked it out of the park. iPad app is amazing.

Will this have the DNxCel 444 codec as well? Or is 422 10-bit 175 the best compromise?

Maybe you are thinking of a simple transmitter they had @ NAB?

LOOKS great guys well done!

is the Red sync to ipad only possible without the Meizler Module or will that be a standalone feature. I seem to remember Ted using an Alpha version with just an epic?

Awesome, I love the Ipad app. Any chance that a hardware control surface could be made to do shading for us in live TV land? (I hope TV is't a bad word around here...) I'm working on a control surface engineering project right now for main production. It could be ground shaking for some, see kickstarter in a few months once I get the production prototype built. Can't really say more then that.

I would love to make a shading console if the guys at red would help with technical docs and such, or they could just do it themselves. I really would like to be able to recommend this set up to some of our studio's.

looks great guys, this will really clean up the camera in bigger setups. a lot of issues with so many accessories and such a small camera is you literally run out of real estate to do what you need to do on set. preston, cinetape, wireless audio/tc/video. this all in one now, and there's more real estate for balancing. still compact, but really clean and efficient. this is as big of a deal as dragon will be.

wireless ipad app is also a nice touch, are you guys developing the app for mac os app store as well, so you can do color control on a computer? the best thing would be to be able to use a control surface on the computer and connect via laptop or tower wifi through the app and build your in camera luts that way. have finer controls over the color, rather than using your finger trying to do very fine changes. lot easier to do camera matching too. and i can do a still store on a decklink or something and pull up the shot and match to it if it's shooting the same scene on a different day. really hope you guys have that planned!

also any info you can divulge on the proxies? is it a set bitrate and resolution, or can you modify it to all flavors?

ie. the h264 proxies already in mp4 to go directly in ipads, and you can choose up to a max bitrate

and all dnxhd flavors of course.

last few questions

can it record multiple proxies at once? h264 and a editorial codec like dnxhd or "blank tab" at the same time so you have instant ipad dailies to watch and direct to edit proxies?

can the current reader take the mini mags? or are they smaller than the 1.8 ssd's?

thanks for all the hard work. i think i'll be see the meizler on a lot of sets when they start shipping.

i really hope this thing works as advertised. my redmote still craps out every now and then and is not really reliable, even after the antenna upgrade and being sent in to replace a stuck enter button. so color me skeptical... but i really do hope it works perfectly.
