  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Meet Snappy @ ISO 800

I would probably take that bet :)

The sensor upgrade program we are hoping to begin in late January. As you can all see from me and Jim's back and forth footage posts we are doing the final software tweaks now.. and the progress day to day is stunning.

Sign me up! I can't wait. :)

If i upgrade to Mx will i loose the stage 2 opportunity?

See the Oct 30th Announcement: Stage Two is "Buy an Epic X S35 and KEEP your Red One". Epic is $19,500 and comes with a 5" LCD while the S35 Mx upgrade for the Red One will be $4,500.

I can't see not upgrading the Red One; Jarad's sample is stunning. I hope I can swing the price of the Epic when my number comes up so I can own both cams.

Will Red Ones sold from February have MX sensors?

Woohoo! I think #27x needs a new sensor :-).

Presuming I'd be in that first batch of upgrades a month from now, what's the estimated time for turnaround on an M-X upgrade?

Wow. What does a Red One gain exactly with this new sensor? Are we talking mostly DR, sensitivity, etc? It doesn't gain FPS or resolution or anything like that, does it? I suppose there will be general "image quality" gains?

This is fantastic news!!! Will upgrading disqualify an R1 from getting us into Stage 2, for example?

You get the DR, sensitivity, and the new color science but you are still limited to 4.5K res, same FPS, and same compression rates. At least from what I've gathered so far that seems to be the case. So, the reason this is an attractive option is because if you don't need 5K, you're okay with current frame rates, the compression data rate is working fine for you, and you don't mind the form factor of the R1 then it might be enough of an upgrade to go this route.

The sensitivity gains alone are worth the price of admission for me. This is huge news. What about the question of whether this would preclude an R1 from being used to get into Stage 2 Epic X?

Same here. I love shooting in 4.5k- but when I look at the majority of my work / clients, 95 - 98% of it gets mastered at 1080p or 2k. So while 5k would be nice, the added gains of this sensor to the Red One are good enough.

How so? Install Quicktime and play it. That's all I did on Windows 7.

Quicktime on Windows has a funky Gamma issue (not sure how I can correct this) but I just snapshotted and now I see the blacks properly. Yeah, awesome!

Yep, same problem as a few others, I wasn't up to date on Quicktime.

Footage is fantastic as always, wishing I had a RED One M-X right now...

I would assume that they would not sell any until all current RED ONE owners have had their chance to upgrade. And yes, it does sure seem like a logistical nightmare ... but I'd wager there is a good plan in place ...

R1 owners get first crack..

Our Brian F. has put together quite an impressive infrastructure to handle the upgrades.. We are actually getting quite efficient at the logistical side of these upgrade programs.

10 years from now... try to remember who lead the charge when everyone else is doing this stuff. Trust me... they wouldn't if they hadn't been forced to.

I hope 10 years from now you are still kickin their asses six ways to Sunday. Whoever is left standing anyway.

If this is what you can do in TWO years, I can't imagine where you will be pushing the limits of technology and the industry in 10 years...

A 10k Camera that does native 3D, shoots in Redcode 1500, & has 26 stops of latitude ...

Too late..
They've already a 28K planned. ;)
