  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Meet Kevin Stanley

Uninstalled, deleted old REDCINE data (all in Application Data\REDCINE) installed again and it works!

NR works great, visible difference.

Details - could be bit more pronounced, very small difference but noticeable.

Sharpen - slider works correct now from 0 to 100 but I can’t see any difference.

Highlight – works but still have to be kicked by changing Contrast or other sliders by .01 or any other value. Highlight slider doesn’t have (execute_value_after_change), implemented as all other sliders have.

I am using Jim’s race track clip A003_C007_071105_001.R3D and MARTIAL_ARTS_feet.R3D

Hardware:
Dell XPS M1730 with NVIDIA Intel dual core XP 32bit

Same with me on the sharpen. Can move slider, but no noticable difference. Also I can see no noticable difference on Details.
Both on my MacBook Pro and my 8 core Mac Pro. By the way edge enhancement would be cool in Redcine, too.

um yeah.. good idea Mark. man did this thread get sidetracked.

Redcine shot operations

Redcine shot operations

Redcine is an awesome app... not an original line I know, but damn I'm loving it.
I do have a question possibly will be resolved in future builds but for the time being a question none the less. The display guide settings in the project settings menu give the option of selecting the time code to be displayed bellow the frame display in the view port. The frame option out of the drop down menu will display a frame count from the entire time line not of individual clips. In the shot settings of the shot menu the in/out options relate to the frames of individual clips not as part of an entire time line frame count. So there is no way to correspond the frame number displayed in the in/out points of the shot settings menu to the frame numbers in the view port. This is when a few clips are in the time line that is.
Or is there? Am I missing something?

when i load footage shot @ 23,98 fps into redcine, the metadata window shows the footage was shot at 24 fps.

bug or how can i read the real framerate.

thanks

and can you please explain , how .r3d files that are bigger then 2 GB are treated? i guess you will get 2 folders, something like part 1and part 2....
which is the best workflow in regards to redalert/fcp/redcine...traps/workarounds etc.

thanks

I believe you get one folder, with more than one R3D file. Only one set of QT proxies.

So for each take/clip there should be:
one folder (.RDC)
three QT proxies (.mov)
one or more RAW files (.R3D)

Proxies will reference as many R3D files as there are. The R3D files reference each other. So I believe opening the first of the raw files in REDCINE or RedAlert will get the whole clip, from as many files as necessary.

Looking at the file naming convention, you could have up to 999 RAW files making up a single clip, so around 2TB... Should be plenty.

1) it will create a folder per clip

2) each folder contains at least one r3d file, or multiple 2 gb files if it the clip is longer

3) the folder also contains 2 quicktime files

4) the quicktime files will indeed have a "grade" that you've set in camera (like white balance, gain, etc.)

5) if you don't like the results of #4 you can re-generated the quicktimes on your computer with different grade settings

ProRes requires less resources to decode than REDCODE for example.

-------------what does nr 2 mean exactly?

This is a bug, the QT reference files keep the frame rate you set in the camera (checked in FCP) and since they are just referencing the .r3d file your footage should be keeping the fps set in the camera.

The clip folder will contain 1 or more .R3D REDCODE files. As they reach 2GB they are split to a new file.

The clip folder might look like this:

A001_C001_080201.RDC
- A001_C001_080201_001.R3D
- A001_C001_080201_002.R3D
- A001_C001_080201_003.R3D
- A001_C001_080201_H.mov
- A001_C001_080201_M.mov
- A001_C001_080201_P.mov

The .mov proxy files reference all three R3D files. And the RED tool, I believe, will also understand the relationship of those files.

What if i want to generate proxys from this folder in red alert? will the proxys be divided or will ra realize that nr1 belongs to nr2, nr3 etc.

so i have RED Alert , i load the 1st .r3d file,A001_C001_080201_001.R3D, and you cant open more then one .r3d file in REDALERT at a time, right? Now i hit "make quickimes": i`ll get the 3 proxys...now i take the second part .r3d file, A001_C001_080201_002.R3D
and load...hit "make quicktimes", now you would have another 3 proxys. etc this way i would end up with 9 proxys genarated by RED ALERT

i think this is where i miss somthing ( i dont have one of those folders to experiment with)

I believe when you load the _001.R3D file into RED Alert it will automatically get the other parts of the clip. As far as the Red tools are concerned they are all a single clip, just broken into chunks.

Hi Kevin !

Welcome also to you...!
So I have a question regarding decoding differences between REDALERT and REDCINE. The Colors and Colorspace is not same interpreted. Redalert has a very nice cineastic look to the red footage but redcine has there some differences, specially in REDCINE is too much Magenta in it. Please take a look to the pictures and thread here:

thx

Looking at the red (magenta) lamp at lower left in this image: http://www.reduser.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2927&d=1201811403
it's strange- look at the green channel, see how it goes to absolute 0 black, below the "black" level everywhere else in the image?

Is this frame better in Red Alert? Based on my own experiments http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=136640&postcount=24
(deep red colors also show up in the blue channel, on this camera) I don't think this is something that can be fixed in the camera as it is now without redesigning the sensor color filters. Either you don't use really deep reds (very low color temperature) or you try some gymnastics with color correction in post, but of course that may affect other colors too.

...well, maybe with suitable cleverness you can do something nonlinear in your color matrix, so for areas where the red channel is high and the green channel goes negative, it knows to suppress blue in that region.

the only thing that i can say is, that the strong magenta color shown at the lips and in the skin tone, is quite harder at redcine. redalert specially show the skin color in my opinion correct, without this heavy red color space.
