RED has added Kevin Stanley to the RED Team.

http://www.reduser.net/forum/member.php?u=6944

Kevin comes from a heavy workflow/post background and will be focusing on RED-specific workflow. He already knows REDCINE pretty darn well and is also getting up to speed on RED Alert, SCRATCH, and FCP. While beta REDCINE and beta RED Alert are still considered "publicly supported by REDUSER", Kevin is going to be helping answer questions as much as he can. He will routinely troll REDUSER for workflow questions, will assist with questions directly to RED on REDCINE and RED Alert, etc.

Again, REDCINE and RED Alert are both considered beta and community supported, so the best spot to get help is here in these forums. Kevin will chime in as much as possible.

Thanks, BC

Good to have you on board the good ship RED, Kevin!

Kevin, welcome on board!!

But since you are on board, what the heck is wrong with this sharpen slider
stuck on value 3 in REDCINE??!

Just kidding............
Welcome!

Thanks for the warm welcome, I'm excited to have joined the RED team and look forward to helping out any way I can.

1st question:
In build 82 - import a bunch of 25fps clips to a 25 fps project - all clips import with 24 fps timebase - how do I change ALL clips at one time to 25 ???

without using this answer:
try to export an xml from redcine. then open it in texteditor. open the find option (cmd-f) find "<fps> 24" and say in the second bar "replace" with "<fps> 25". try to reimport the xml.

and this issue:
One thing that seems to have disappeared from build 82 is the ability to apply output scaling to DPX files.

You can scale in the output tab for QuickTime movies, but it is greyed out for DPX. In my experience, output scaling (done in software with a choice of filter) is higher quality than the scaling in the shot tab (done in GPU) so I prefer to generate 2k DPX files on output from a 4k project, but can't do that any more.

8-Core Mac Pro, ATI X1900. Are people with different systems finding the same thing?

Try creating a new Redcine project, save it, import your footage (using either "load all" or "load shot") once the footage is in the timeline try selecting each clip (one at a time) by swiping the timeline slider over it. Now change the Framerate in the Format Settings in the Project Tab to 25fps. You will have to do this for every shot just as you would to adjust the shot framing or color. It should keep the 25fps you specified for each shot upon processing. You can batch process all of your clips into separate folders by clicking the #6.E button in the Output Settings tab, then clicking the Separate Folders button. NOTE: Redcine does not like to write over existing files, either delete the previous output folder and/or set a new folder path to ensure you are seeing the changes you made and not a previous version. Let me know if this helps.

I haven't tried this, would not go about it this way though.

I just tried this on our MacPro Quad and scaling filters are present with DPX output of all resolutions, also tested XP and also scaling was enabled. If you are experiencing loss of function in Redcine you may want to try reinstalling (especially if this is an update from a previous version). if you decide to reinstall refer to the read me text file in the installation folder, there are a couple of steps that need to happen for a clean install, they are documented in the read me file.

Hope this helps, if not let me know and we'll take it from there.

Kevin, could you test the sharpen slider please.
many people reported that it doesn't work or it get stuck at some single digit value.

Nice to meet you Kevin. First thing you need is a mean avatar. Something that says "workflow" like a chain-gang with rocket-boots.

Likewise John, I like your idea, very creative! Although now that I'm a part of the RED team I want to represent us properly.. so I'll probably be rocking the RED icon shortly.

Kevin

Kevin,

Can you show Brent what a cool RED photo should look like. In his profile it looks like his mum just told him off in front of his mates.:bleh:

Welcome! Great to have some post workflow expertise on the team. I noticed in your introduction to the team the lack of the word Avid as part of the workflow... I am sure it was an oversight.

That being said - my question has gone unanswered in other threads. When will REDCINE allow for choosing a DNxHD codec data rate as part of the QT render - this is available to every other QT aware application so it seems to be minimal amount of work to allow the GUI to access what is already available. Is it a matter of priority?

Hm, good question. I'm really curious too (and a little anxious). What is the currently available DNxHD codec data rate available in RedCine?

When creating 1080p/23.976 it only saves out as DNxHD115. What is missing is DNxHD 36, DNxHD 175 and DNxHD 175x. It seems in 1080p/25 it is DNxHD 180 but I haven't tested that myself.

Michael

Hmmm.... thanks for the quick response. That is a bit high level. My questions are for file based workflows - not tape based. Avid will soon have a RED XML to ALE conversion for ingest of the QT based proxies - but the choice of data rate is based on REDCINE to which there is no control by the user. For now the questions are basic - there is a lot more metadata that is of interest to the post production workflow that is still not available -

For now:

1. When will a QT codec for PC be available?
2. When will the DNxHD data rates be available within RedCine (Mac or PC)?
3. I noticed a data field in the XML already being different from one generated in a previous version - will that format be finalized? I can understand additional metadata being added, but previously available metadata no longer being there is harder to deal with. Notably, the "/note/" tag.
4. Easy presets for output where a DPX export matches the QT file name and format.
5. Automatically creating the XML when exporting files rather than a "save project as" and manually setting it to .xml

Michael

Michael, aren't you already talking to Tony directly about these questions?
